10 Gifts To Improve Someone’s Home This Holiday Season

Words by Mr Shane C Kurup

Every year, the holiday season seems to have the sneaky habit of coming round that little bit earlier. Funny that, considering it’s always on the same date. But with everything else we’ve had to contend with over the past 12 months, it’s stealthy approach has probably truly caught you off guard this time round. Luckily, we’re helpful sorts here at MR PORTER and we’ve got bags of ideas if you find yourself short of inspiration. ‘Tis the season for giving, after all. First up, some gift ideas for the home.

Given that this is the time of the year for the most heinous sort of feasting, having an appropriate tipple to help digest all that epicurean excess is practically mandatory. Luckily, Bond Street’s Asprey – a long-time purveyor of objets d’art favoured by everyone from Maharajas to Ms Marilyn Monroe – knows that consuming your favourite digestif from the finest crystal-wear will make it taste that much sweeter.

While the clothes he puts on his back say a lot about a man’s tastes, the art on his walls is equally revealing. Sonic Editions specialises in framing those iconic moments from history and this atmospheric 1966 snap of Mr Ray Charles performing at Carnegie Hall is just one of those. Anyone who appreciates the dynamism of a live performance, and the strains of Charles will happily give this pride of place in their living room.

We’d be the first to admit a fondness for the versatile shades of navy, black and grey, but sometimes, a little colour is needed to cut it. In the case of these bold jazzy towels in Missoni Home’s signature geometric zigzags, they’ll brighten up bath or beach time no end.

Is there anything cosier than snuggling beneath a blanket with your nearest and dearest after a feasting session at the table? The person in your life will surely want to make use of this rustic patchwork example from Greg Lauren. And the fact it’s made from repurposed tent cloth is sure to make it feel that bit more comfortable.

Sometimes, only the best will do and when it comes to the king of yarns, few do it better than Loro Piana. Made from the finest cashmere fibres the brand could gather, this throw has a handle so soft, it’s the closest you can get to stroking a cloud. Whoever the lucky soul is you gift this to, they’re likely to be sofa-bound well into the new year.

They say that boys never truly grow up and for the man who wants to relive his half-pipe heyday – but would rather not risk a hip – this porcelain skateboard from By Japan is a wise alternative. Whether he chooses to mount it on the wall of his den or use it to serve up appetisers, he’ll be able to regale the crowd with tales of his past skate-park glories.

Californian label The Elder Statesman was founded by Mr Greg Chait, who has gained a loyal following for his contemporary cashmere pieces. His masterful use of colour and artisanal craft techniques are evident throughout his work – this vibrant cushion being a case in point. The man who seeks good design and comfort from his clothes will surely appreciate finding this under the wrapping paper.

An antique Persian rug is nothing to be sniffed at, but if the man you know has more contemporary tastes, this eye-catching design from rrres should be more his thing underfoot. And like its exotic predecessors, it’s been made using techniques just as noteworthy – from the pedal loom woven fabric to the hand-dyed abstract pattern.

Some men still find it hard to admit a fondness for flowers, but if the bud-embellished motifs seen across numerous collections for the past few years are anything to go by, things are changing. As for this Soho Home vase inspired by Ancient Greek water vessels it doesn’t even require a bouquet of blooms to look good on a shelf. After all, there’s no need to gild the lily.

For the truly indulgent epicurean, this bar set by master Italian crafter Buccellati will be the centrepiece of their cocktail trolley. Cast from solid sterling silver, it’s given a touch of the baroque with its Caviar-like embellishment. The set has everything he needs to craft the perfect pre-or post-dinner libation from the orange peeler to cheese knife and bottle opener. All that’s missing of course is the beluga.
