The sharpest looks from the streets of the City Of Light this show season.
After four cities, hundreds of fashion shows, and a rather exhausting amount of dashing around, this season’s main menswear shows are almost over, with just New York to go. They came to a close, as they always do, in Paris, where some of fashion’s heaviest hitters including Vetements, Off-White, and Thom Browne showcased their AW18 collections. As well as all the good stuff striding down the runways, though, we also had our eye on what was going on in the streets outside – namely all those enviably well-dressed gentlemen who come out in force for fashion week before disappearing again for six months. In an attempt to capture a little of that sartorial expertise for ourselves, we’ve studied their outfits to see how they did it and distilled what we’ve learnt into a few tips below.
CONSISTENTLY NOTEWORTHY

There are a few men who go to the shows season after season who manage to turn it out every time, but somehow could never be accused of peacocking. Mr Bruce Pask, fashion director at New York store Bergdorf Goodman, is one such dresser – here he is in a laced Craig Green jacket, avocado-coloured trousers and fingerless shearling gloves. Our favourite thing about this look, though, is that from his jotter to umbrella, Mr Pask is characteristically prepared. Who said fashion was just for posers?

AGAINST ALL ODDS

On paper, this outfit shouldn’t work at all. Knitwear layered over knitwear? Long-sleeved shirt under short-sleeved kimono jacket? Bright green sweater dotted with what looks like a game of backgammon? Cargo pants? We’re not sure what this show goer’s secret is, but he’s managed to make all of it sit together. The green of the sweater is offset nicely by the grey of the striped jacket, and it’s all smartened up by the shirt underneath. It’s tricky to pull off, sure, but all the more impressive for doing so.

INTELLIGENT LAYERING

A rare thing for a gentleman to make our best-dressed street style list twice in a single article, but this man (of green and grey knitwear fame in the previous photograph) was doing such a good job with his clothes in Paris that we couldn’t resist. This outfit is first and foremost a masterclass in layering, with the black rollneck, collared shirt, cropped jacket and checked wool coat making for a millefeuille of colours and textures that, while presumably rather warm, look very good together. Down to the one hand in his pocket and the other smoking a cigarette, we have to give this guy his due for consistency.

CHECK MATE

The companion of US Esquire’s executive director of editorial Mr Michael Hainey looks rather miffed here. Perhaps he’s annoyed at Mr Hainey for donning a coat that is more than a little similar to his own. Perhaps it’s because Mr Hainey is wearing his rather masterfully – with a bold bit of layering (is that double houndstooth?) Whatever happens, he shouldn’t be too upset. They both look great. Even if the quilted Thom Browne scarves they are grasping look, at first glance, like sleeping bags. Rough night, guys?

STREETWEAR HEROES

This year, the shows have been awash with brightly coloured streetwear. And Paris, a city known for sophistication and elegance, is no different. Our friend on the right shows us that a cropped haircut and some razor sharp cheek bones are all you need to wear a yellow Helly Hansen puffa jacket without looking like somebody who might have bullied you at school. His companion is having sartorial success via a more subtle route. A pop of colour from an over the shoulder belt bag are the only credentials required to get on board with the streetwear trend.

STAR QUALITY

This is more the type of look that we expect from Paris, if we were romanticising the city. A tall, dark man who looks like he’s taking a break on a film set (is that an autograph hunter to his right?). Wide-legged, pleated trousers. An oversize, long wool overcoat. A tucked-in, cream, what looks like alpaca sweater. Hell, the guy’s even smoking a cigarette. We bet it’s a Gauloises. And we bet it’s his twentieth of the day.
