THE JOURNAL

The world’s best ski resorts are built for two types of gentlemen: those who fancy flinging themselves down the slopes with the greatest of ease and those who prefer to lounge fireside with a well-mixed cocktail to hand. For members of the latter fold (or even for those who like to do a bit of both), we’ve identified six luxury mountainside chalets each fully equipped with all the trappings of a sublime apres-ski situation, including open fires, cosy furnishings and powder-dusted vistas. Grab a book, a mug of hot chocolate and make yourself comfortable.

El Lodge, Spain

Wedged into the blindingly white slopes of Andalucía’s Sierra Nevada mountain range, El Lodge is a grown-up, log cabin boutique hotel with a singular style of its own. With antler- and cowhide-bedecked rooms outfitted with private hot tubs on the balconies, socialising isn’t strictly necessary. However, for those who prefer their apres-ski scene a bit more lively, the piste-side, ski-in ski-out Sun Deck offers faux-fur throws and outdoor fire pits – plus, tapas and bar service to keep you stocked in icy goblets of gin tonicas. And on the adjacent deck, guests can delve into a steamy outdoor pool or Finnish timber-clad hot tub while taking in the mountain views.

Airelles Courchevel, Les Airelles, France

As one of the most sophisticated resort towns in all of the Alps, the glitterati-packed Alpine alcove of Courchevel – and the town of Courchevel 1850 in particular – delivers the kind of see-and-be-seen scene that’s popular with champagne-soaked Russian oligarchs and British royalty. But like something out of Narnia, the storybook-like Les Airelles flies under the flashy radar and is most popular with those who have refined tastes – including the French. Take in some live jazz and local génépi, a botanical liqueur, in the deeply comfortable bar adorned with overstuffed couches and log-fed fires, or indulge in some rare cigars and warming cognac in the handsome smoking room.

The new Lefay Resort is a modernist study in glass, wood, stone and light that harmonises with the dramatic mountain-scape it inhabits. Covering four levels and over 5,000sq m, Lefay has one of the biggest spas in the Alps, making this sleek spot the perfect place for some post-piste R&R. Fringed by the powder-topped peaks of Madonna di Campiglio and the Brenta Dolomites Unesco World Heritage site, the outdoor Sky Lounge makes for another pristine apres-ski setting. Settle in with a book or sink a few Pinzolo’s Mules, a signature cocktail made with gin, homemade yoghurt liqueur, cucumber, lemon juice and ginger beer.

Hotel Jerome, US

With a storied history that features counterculture icon Mr Hunter S Thompson, who was once a bar fixture, the raffish Hotel Jerome has been a part of Aspen’s social scene since the silver rush in 1889, when it first opened its doors. Blessed with plenty of snug nooks in which to while away the hours, this timeless retreat has an Old-West-meets-private-club vibe that’s – above all – relaxed and comfortable. Kick your feet up and stay a while. Also, don’t miss digging into the spoils of the Rocky Mountains and the local cattle ranches at the in-house restaurant, Prospect, which boasts a pop-up residency hosted by Noma alum and zero-waste devotee chef Mr Mads Refslund from 3 February until 31 March.

Built with clean and modern Swiss precision with an aesthetic undercurrent of Asian Zen, the top-of-the-line The Chedi Andermatt is a spacious high-flying haven for those who want to hit the 120km of nearby slopes – or those who’d rather not. With 123 keys and multiple dining options, this is a sanctuary of superlatives that non-skiers will love. For example, with more than 330 options, the ultra-cool Cigar Library boasts the largest selection of cigars of any Swiss hotel, and teetering above sea level at 2,300m like the snowy hideout of a Bond villain, The Japanese by The Chedi Andermatt is Switzerland’s highest-altitude Japanese restaurant.

Experimental Chalet, Verbier, Switzerland

Though set in the serious ski town of Verbier, popular with off-piste pioneers, the Experimental Chalet Verbier added a new layer of ski-free cool to this resort town when it first opened in December 2018. With bijou-hip interiors, of which Mr Wes Anderson would approve, a trendy cocktail den, plus famous hotspot the Farm Club in the basement (use the “secret” entrance by the reception), you certainly don’t need to ski to have a good time when you’re staying at the Experimental Chalet.
