Thanks to the efforts of a growing coterie of brands, grotesquery is par for the course in the style world these days, particularly and perhaps, most successfully, when it comes to footwear. There are myriad socio-economic and cultural theories making the rounds that rationalise the rise of the so-called ugly (otherwise known as “dad”) sneaker, but, as is often the case with these sorts of things, the simplest explanation is often the most compelling.

“Ugliness is more fun than beauty,” Mr Umberto Eco said when his counterargument to On Beauty was published back in 2007 and, in style’s current climate, we’re rather inclined to agree. So, lest we tick off a handful of our favourite brands, it goes without saying that by bestowing the following trio of kicks with the designation, we intend it as a heartfelt compliment.
