THE JOURNAL

For those of us who spend much of the year under a grey sky (cough, MR PORTER HQ in London, cough), summer is the most welcome time of year. It’s an excuse to drink more, wear less, and enjoy the weather. Until it comes for our hair, that is. When confronted with sweat, heat and humidity, even the most carefully coiffed barnet can devolve into a floppy, greasy mess that can have you looking like a hairy mammoth in a heatwave, and a buzzcut starts to sound appealing. But before you reach for the clippers, consider these five summer-proof hair products to help you keep your cool.
01.
The detox treatment

If you suffer with an irritated scalp that’s made all the worse with the inevitable sweat of the summer, MALIN+GOETZ’s detox scalp mask should be on your radar. With the cooling effect of peppermint and spearmint leaf oils, it’s great to use after a day in the sun (or after a workout) to help remove all the grimy build-up on your scalp, thereby calming inflammation, banishing dandruff and leaving your head feeling fresher than a pillow with a mint on it.
02.
The hair oil

Hair oil, in summer? Though it might sound like it’ll do nothing but weigh hair down and leave it looking greasy, the right oil will help preventing frizz and dryness that can be brought on by the heat. This one from Sisley is gold-standard – made from passion fruit, cotton and shea oils, it has a lightweight, super-luxe feel that smells incredible and works as a light-touch styling aid.
03.
The beachy conditioner

Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist Conditioner is ideal for summer, and not just because its scent is reminiscent of a day at the beach. Working to volumise and strengthen, it works particularly well on fine hair that can feel limp or lifeless in the heat, giving it a boost without weighing it down.
04.
The travel set

For good hair days on the go, you’ll need a reliable travel set. Harry’s Hair Bundle comes with sculpting gel, texturising putty, and a taming cream to cover all manner of styles – you can take it in your carry-on luggage, but we also think it’s a great way to test out some of the brand’s products to see which one your hairstyle vibes with the most.
05.
The dry shampoo

If your scalp is on the oilier side – or your hair starts to get a little lank between washes – consider investing in a can of Hanz de Fuko’s Dry Shampoo. A no-nonsense product that does its job without leaving any unsightly residue, a blast of this stuff will give naturally fresh and healthy hair, even in the heat.
