THE JOURNAL

Yes, we know. The temperatures have plummeted, the level of glumness is at an all-time high (or should that be low?) and, well, the season of cold, dark days has only just begun. But all is not lost. Even though this time of year comes with bleak weather conditions, it also offers us free rein to experiment with layers and proportions. To slip on a pair of sturdy boots, wear as many winter warmers as we possibly can and, most importantly, to have fun with what we wear.
Spring is just around the corner (honest), and a host of new collections are about to land on MR PORTER’s virtual shelves. So why not get the basics right while you can? Here are three fundamental style lessons to get you started and help you level up your wardrobe with colour, textures and accessories – just read on.
01.
Layering is key

Mastering the art of layering requires lots of trial and error. Mostly error. But with the right knitwear, outerwear and thermals, wrapping yourself up in multiple layers can single-handedly prep you for the worst of the cold weather. As if it wasn’t obvious from its very name, Piacenza Cashmere specialises in the plush yarn, so you can’t go wrong with its knits. A cashmere coat is also a good option – UMIT BENAN B+’s is cut in a double-breasted profile with a smooth silk lining and ample room for winter layers underneath.
02.
Experiment with accessories

Winter accessories are the best way to experiment with colour and texture without having to switch up the other layers. Think of finishing touches such as jewellery – colourful bracelets, necklaces or rings from Yvonne Léon, Suzanne Kalan or 42 SUNS will do. Or opt for practicality with a bag, sunglasses (like AHLEM’s square-frame pair), a timepiece, or all three. Born of necessity – and first designed for the raiders of the Royal Italian Navy in the 1930s – Panerai’s iconic Radiomir reference combines sleek Italian design with impeccable Swiss technology and the build quality and durability of diving watches. Its dark-brown nubuck strap will work well with most autumnal and wintery colours, and even better with RRL’s southwestern-inspired woven duffle bag.
03.
Embrace logos and patterns

We’ve dedicated a full guide to wearing patterns, so we’ll leave this short and sweet. The gloomier the weather, the darker our clothes usually tend to be – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Enter logos, patterns and prints, which together prove that you can, indeed, have fun with your winter clothes. Whether it’s a Mr P. navy and camel checked coat, something more casual, such as a CHERRY LA logo cap or printed T-shirt, or something intricate, but not always visible – try Jacquie Aiche’s signet ring or RRL’s embellished belt – you’re sure to find something to brighten up your layers, whatever your style.
