The Work Bags That Will Carry You Through The Week

Heading back to the office and our routine shouldn’t mean reverting to our old wardrobe. At least, not entirely. Now is the best time to reassess our essentials, starting with that one item that will reliably carry you – and your stuff – through your work week. A form-meets-function bag that can make the daily commute feel that bit more bearable and certainly a whole lot more stylish. In need of some inspiration? Here are some carriers that also pack a punch.

01. The messenger bag

Messenger bags come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important you find one that suits your lifestyle and needs. Based on the assumption that you won’t need to carry anything bulky on your commute, there are a few ways you can go about it, depending on your office dress code. If a suit and tie is the attire du jour, we’d recommend keeping the style stakes high with LOEWE’s Cubi. If you have a tad more freedom, however, you can experiment with more directional shapes and textures – Our Legacy’s denim style or Acne Studios suede camera bag are some of our favourite ways to do so.

02. The tote

Totes often toe the line between smart and casual, so your choice of bag can single-handedly determine whether you’re on your way to the farmer’s market or, as you should be, the office. Colourful and utilitarian styles from CELINE and A.P.C. will feel right at home in creative workspaces, but you’re likely going to need something different for the boardroom. A boxy style in soft leather from Berluti adds volume and depth to a monochrome suit, while Studio Nicholson’s sleek black tote keeps things classic.

03. The backpack

Backpacks are all about functionality. They’re ideal for casual office days, trips to the gym, travelling and running errands. But not all styles are created equal – and choosing one that blends practicality with a certain sense of refinement is key. Here, we’d suggest you opt for premium materials such as leather or suede and consider timeless pieces from heavyweights such as TOM FORD, Brunello Cucinelli or SAINT LAURENT.

04. The briefcase

Forget stuffy silhouettes and outdated designs – the briefcase just got cooler thanks to the likes of Dunhill, Berluti and Officine Creative. Not only does it prevent your essentials from getting bashed and crumpled, it also just looks that bit smarter. If classic silhouettes feel a little too structured, consider investing in a portfolio. It’s equally suitable for boardroom dress codes, but it’ll make a punchier style statement than its hand-held counterpart.

05. The weekend bag

Yes, the name says weekend, but this piece of kit will do double duty in the week, too. Spacious enough for a change of gym kit on the days you manage to squeeze in a session before or after work, and just as ready to take you straight from your desk to wherever you’re headed for the weekend. The secret is finding a shape that’s both functional and considered. Métier’s suede style strikes that balance well, while SAINT LAURENT and Serapian offer something elevated, for those who prefer their off-duty luggage to match the polish of their desk-bound one.
