In the 1980s, the West German Army issued simple, low-profile sneakers to its troops, then known as bundeswehr sportschuhe, or federal defence sports shoe. Now known as the German Army Trainer – or GAT for short – it's become one of the most recognisable styles in the world, from the two-tone panelling to the slim gum soles.
