Suede Western Jacket
A new brand designed and created by MR PORTER. It’s a range of clothes that we ourselves have always wanted: stylish, yet understated; simple, but full of the small touches that matter; affordable, but made to the highest standards. The idea is to make the art of getting dressed that little bit more straightforward, as well as enjoyable. The rest, of course, is up to you.
Before we set about designing the new Mr P. collection, we posed ourselves a series of questions. What qualities do men look for in clothes? To what extent, if at all, do they wish to be defined by what they wear? We soon realised, of course, that we couldn’t fully answer these questions on our own. In order to build a brand that is consistent with the way that real men want to dress, we needed to meet a few of them first. So we headed to Los Angeles to ask three creatives to road test the new collection.
“There was one [guitar] that was on the wall [in the neighbourhood guitar shop] that I just tried out every time that I came here. Every time I picked it up, it was just like, I wanna take this home. I mean, it's probably similar to clothes. When you find something that's good, it just feels right. ”
Singer, songwriter and musician Mr Benjamin Booker recently released his second album, Witness, to significant critical fanfare. He writes and records music that juxtaposes comfortable with raw; new with old; always exploring the relationships between different textures – relationships that are mirrored in the way he dresses.
“Over time, I’ve developed a relatively low-key but nuanced style. I really think that the details are important. I don’t like to make big, sweeping gestures. I don't want people to be able to read my existence completely from my outfit.”
Mr Patrick Belaga’s improvisational, expressive cello playing style led him to win a role scoring Lady Gaga’s first feature film. While dressing for practice in his austere West Hollywood home, however, he values comfort, simplicity, and the ability to “be himself” above all else.
“I think surf culture impacts my dress the most. That look, that mentality and lifestyle of just being out in the water, on the beach, in very minimal things goes back to that sense of ‘I don’t need a lot to be happy.’”
Surfer, photographer, model, husband, father and entrepreneur Mr Matt C Bauer is, it’s safe to say, a busy man. Despite his demanding schedule, you’ll find him rising early to surf most mornings, before attending to his various roles. He prefers well-crafted, versatile apparel to match.
