Ever been at a party while a guitar is passed around? Invariably it ends up in the hands of someone horribly smug, who then proceeds to charm everyone in the room with their undeniable "talent". I'd like to "out" this guy/girl and reveal the little-known secret that, in fact, most of the world's favourite songs can be played with just three chords and be learned in a little under an hour. Here's how...

SOME COMMON MISTAKES...

Being soft

Make sure you press down firmly as the note will not ring out well if you don't. You should make sure your nails are filed right down on your left hand (if you are right-handed), as this will give you better contact with the string

Getting carried away

Strum only the strings indicated otherwise the whole thing will sound discordant

Throwing in the towel

Don't give up. Yes, your fingers will hurt and the odd callus may appear but I've taught six-year-olds to do this, man up! Your finger strength will improve with practise
