Mr Alexander Wang has been king of downtown style since founding his eponymous label in New York City in 2007. Characterised by relaxed silhouettes, sporty details and a dark colour palette, his leather jackets, jersey T-shirts, cotton sweatpants and knits have attracted a cult following and are found in the wardrobes of stylish urbanites everywhere. "I tend to like the most basic pieces with the perfect fit and fabric," Mr Wang says. The relaxed simplicity of his own line is in contrast to the distinctly uptown sensibility of the Parisian fashion house Balenciaga, though, where Mr Wang was appointed creative director last year. But if his first collection there is anything to go by, the designer is equally at home in both worlds.
Despite his hectic schedule, Mr Wang found time to create an eight-piece capsule collection available exclusively on MR PORTER this season. Including a leather bomber jacket, a varsity jacket and a line of T-shirts and sweats, the range is fashion-forward yet relaxed - and very easy to wear. "The collection includes some of my favourite styles from our men's ready-to-wear and T by Alexander Wang lines," he says. "For this collaboration, it felt right to make the selection really personal and effortless: these pieces are essentials in my everyday wardrobe."
