Words by Mr Peter Henderson

The thing with double-breasted," the journalist and style authority Mr Glenn O'Brien says, "is that it's for men, not boys." He makes a good point. From its chest-accentuating, waist-slimming silhouette to its association with power brokers and gangsters, double-breasted tailoring is an uncompromisingly masculine wardrobe component. These days, though, double-breasted suits and jackets are no longer associated with 1980s excess, and have instead been reinterpreted by designers in an uncluttered, streamlined way. In understated fabrics (no brash pinstripes here) and tailored short in the body with form-fitting cuts (avoiding the long, boxy look grandpa used to favour), the DB jacket is hot property in menswear right now, having featured on the runway this season in the Lanvin, Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent shows, among others.
