Words by Mr Mansel Fletcher

The fourth of this summer's exclusive capsule collections is from London label YMC (You Must Create), which has been producing well-considered casual clothes since Messrs Fraser Moss and Jimmy Collins established it in 1995. In the words of Mr Moss, the nine-piece collection is inspired by: "Early 1960s LA, the golden age of surf culture, the Ivy League goes to the beach and the preppy styling of Dennis Wilson."

The designers have turned these references into an easy-to-wear range of clothes that might just be all the weekend wear you need this summer, whatever the weather. If the sun shines then reach for the classic chino shorts and the madras-check button-down shirt, while cool days will call for the candy-coloured sweat shorts, matching sweatshirt ("If you're brave enough", in Mr Moss' words) and the showerproof bomber jacket - according to the designer it's "A British rainy summer staple".

The fact that the collection contains a lightweight jacket reveals YMC's British origins - only a brand from those rainy islands would make outerwear the centrepiece of its high-summer collection. Mr Moss is so used to the British rain that he doesn't even run to the sun when he can; he describes his perfect holiday as, "Two sunny weeks in [frequently wet] west Wales". However, he also thinks that the collection has, "A touch of the French Riviera, and the West Coast of America about it." Frankly wherever a man is taking his vacation this summer, YMC has most of what he needs in this new range.
