Words by Mr Peter Henderson

The term "classic" is thrown about liberally in menswear, but the polo shirt is one item to which it can truly be applied: its design has not changed since it was developed in the early 20th century, and it looks as good today as it did then. It would be quicker to name contemporary designers who have not produced polo shirts than it would be to go through the exhaustive list of those who have. Bridging the formality gap between a shirt and a T-shirt, the polo is an invaluable wardrobe component, particularly as summer approaches. Click through the gallery above to see a handful of men who have worn them well, and to discover why its origin lies not in polo, as the name would suggest, but in tennis.
