The Best-Dressed Men Of June 2019

From A$AP Rocky to Mr Samuel L Jackson, the most stylish men of the past month

It’s summertime and the living is easy. The swimming pools, the parties, the clashing neon beachwear worn inappropriately at music festivals – it is the season of untrammelled happiness and the MR PORTER Sale. What more could one want? Only inspiration, surely. So, here are eight men who know how to look cool, even in a heatwave.

Mr Matt Bomer

Actor, producer, director, singer – Mr Matt Bomer is a man of parts. Here he is dressed in our in-house label, Mr P., for the publicity tour of his new film, Papi Chulo. Frankly, we’re chuffed. The full look, from suede sneakers, wide-leg cream chinos, down to the broadening stripes beneath the dark denim jacket, is by the brand. He looks sleek, relaxed, a man at the top of his game, which is appropriate enough because this is precisely what he is.

Mr Matthew Koma

Mr Matthew Koma knows a thing or two about putting a song together, having had more hit songs than most people have had hot dinners. He is no slouch when it comes to putting together an outfit, either. The 32-year-old, who has a child with Ms Hilary Duff, has taken the LA hipster archetype and made it that little bit cooler, that tiny bit finer. Let’s start with the ankle-skimming summer chinos – sleek and business-like – while his top half is much more playful. The Biggie Smalls T-shirt and “Let’s Party!” cap and thick-rimmed glasses are pleasingly ironic, while being perfect for the LA heat.

Mr Samuel L Jackson

Here is Mr Samuel L Jackson looking, breathing and, quite probably later, snoring cool. Only a man sure in the knowledge that he is the highest-grossing actor ever (which stood at $13.3bn even before you take into account this year’s batch of Marvel films), with dozens of awards on his mantlepiece, can stand in front of a bank of cameras at the Giorgio Armani show with such nonchalance. As you might expect, he is head to toe in the brand, and how it becomes him. The wide-lapelled white seersucker suit is a good choice as Milan was sweltering. It is all very Italian-chic and we adore the teal tee with the bright-white suit. The cuffed trousers look particularly modern, especially when up against the grey espadrilles.

Mr Takashi Murakami

Mr Takashi Murakami moves between fashion weeks like an Exocet missile – sleek, quick and always chic. The Japanese artist is a master at mixing media, from sculpture to painting, as well as animation and merchandise. Here he is at Mr Karl Lagerfeld’s memorial at the Grand Palais in Paris. His outfit is a model in texture, sizing and tone. First, the oversized shirt in grey with its vast cuff, then the slightly smaller shirt beneath. Somehow, it works. As does the body-lengthening untied cord on the waist of the pleated cargo trousers. Oh, and those box-fresh sneakers, which are whiter than a Hollywood smile. It isn’t the most traditional of memorial service outfits, admittedly, but it works.

A$AP Rocky

Rapper A$AP Rocky could walk out of his front door in sackcloth and still look like he was opening a runway show. He has it. A lot of it. He is not at his front door here – or a Swedish jail cell, where things have taken a turn for the worse since this photograph was taken – but on his way to the Loewe show in Paris, a hand thrust into the pockets of his metallic cargo pants, which have been artfully paired with a cashmere tie-dye sweater by the Spanish label, over a wide-collared shirt. He looks like he is about to set off for the Moon via Venice. We can’t help but worry about him being a bit hot in late June, and even hotter in July, but we suppose when you are that cool…

Mr Kedar Williams-Stirling

The V&A Summer Party always brings out London’s best fashion, as you might expect, considering it is an institute devoted to clothes and the decorative arts. Mr Kedar Williams-Stirling, who stars alongside Ms Gillian Anderson in the Netflix smash Sex Education, has certainly gone the distance. He looks superb. The green T-shirt just peeping beneath the mock-rollneck mélange sweater is particularly well done. As are the slight differing tones in the white suede shoes and pleated chinos. It’s an outfit we can do business with.

Mr Will Poulter

Mr Bomer isn’t the only fan of Mr P. Here is that nice man Mr Will Poulter head to toe in the label at the Hollywood premiere of his latest movie, Midsommar. The star of Black Mirror and The Revenant looks like a 1930s movie legend. Assured, beautifully arranged in clothes and demeanour, he looks a stone-cold icon. It’s the unstructured linen double-breasted suit jacket that does it. That and the tapered trousers. It is the kind of silhouette Mr Rudolph Valentino would have been pleased with.

Mr Vincent Cassel

The actor Mr Vincent Cassel might have been born in Paris, but LA becomes him like a white glove on the Queen. He certainly knows how to dress for it. He pulls off the unlikely feat here of standing next to a parking meter in the blaring sun and looking cool, from the cream plimsolls through to the white chinos, green workwear shirt and yellow sunglasses. He is a study in the muted use of colour – and how to be a star on your day off.
