The Best-Dressed Men Of May 2019

From Mr Brad Pitt to Mr Donald Glover, these are the most stylish men of last month

In the not-so-distant past, May was the peak of the British social season. The wealthy and the titled would glide from Glyndebourne to the Chelsea Flower Show and the Derby in a cloud of champagne fumes and honking laughs. These days, the season, such as it is, is meritocratic and international, stretching from Cannes to New York, and its players are actors and singers, not baronets and minor royalties. All the better, too, for this fresher crop dress much more interestingly. Here is our pick of best of them.

Mr Brad Pitt

Here is Mr Brad Pitt, channelling Mr Richard Burton and Mr Clark Gable, making the front steps of the Hôtel Du Cap-Eden-Roc look like a red carpet. The wing-tip lapelled dinner jacket, the oversized white collar and squared bow tie, along with his sunglasses and slicked-back hair, scream Hollywood’s Golden Age – and we’re tempted to join in the chorus.

Mr Eddie Redmayne

Even off-duty, Mr Eddie Redmayne looks top-drawer. On first glance, it appears he has just thrown his outfit together, but look a bit closer and you notice those small signs of care: the turn-ups on the selvedge jeans, the red chore jacket buttoned nearly, but not quite, to the top, allowing the grey-blue sweater below to peek out. And despite the cyclist’s pannier bag he’s carrying, he isn’t riding his luck – this is an outfit put together with precision.

Mr Chiwetel Ejiofor

There is much to like about Mr Chiwetel Ejiofor: his skill as an actor and kindly demeanour ranking first. But, we must confess we also have a soft spot for him because of his cast-iron commitment to our in-house label Mr P., in which he is dressed here, head to toe, arriving at his hotel in New York. The cashmere sweater with loose-fit trousers is an archetypally good travel outfit, in that it’s comfortable and versatile. Throw on a jacket and you immediately look tony, which is important if you are a Bafta-winning actor.

Mr Donald Glover

Mr Donald Glover is a man for all seasons. Not just because he effortlessly slides between disciplines while always retaining his essential Mr Donald Glover-ness, but also because he looks bloody good whatever the weather. Come rain or shine, his outfit is on the money. We see him here, just out for a stroll on the streets of New York with headphones in, no care in the world. His outfit is as relaxed as he is, the wide-leg, pleated pinstripe trousers, box-fresh sneakers and oversized cardigan, say, “Here I am, take me or leave me”. And, frankly, we’ll take him.

Mr Keiynan Lonsdale

Mr Keiynan Lonsdale is a 27-year-old Australian actor with 830k Instagram followers and a taste for sharp suits. He made his name on Australian teen drama Dance Academy, before moving into film and, in 2018, releasing a pop single “Preach”.  Whatever his CV, he looks cool as ice before the cameras of the Cannes Film Festival, which is quite an achievement. The buckled creepers and slim-fit suit give him height while the silk floral-print shirt and bracelet inject it with a sense of the playful.

Mr Miles Teller

Mr Miles Teller was born in Pennsylvania in 1987, though at Cannes this year, he looked like an escapee from a Mr F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, an incredibly stylish 1930s playboy or the Duke of Windsor’s equerry. The floral camp-collar shirt and billowing white trousers are good on their own, but the pencil-thin ’tache takes it into the jazz-age stratosphere. Quite magnificent.

Mr Luka Sabbat

Pinstripes on suits used to mean cad. Now they just mean cool. And Mr Luka Sabbat is cooler than most. Pictured at the 26th amfAR Gala in Cannes, he manages the difficult trick of pairing a striped suit with a striped shirt, throwing in some white double-buckled boots for good measure. He pulls it off with aplomb.

Mr Richard Madden

Here is Mr Richard Madden striding through the airport at Nice like a man in a hurry. He looks steady and assured, as well he might with Rocketman, the Sir Elton John biopic, having just exploded onto our screens. He wears regulation pap-blocking circular sunglasses over a slim-fit crew-neck T-shirt and black jeans. In itself this is a nice outfit. But the pink suede jacket takes it up a notch. It is a great example of the celebrity outfit that both attracts attention and then brushes it off.
