The Best-Dressed Men Of The Month

Eight famous faces seeing out spring in style

Remember when April used to be the start of spring? Those of us in the UK, which, let’s face it, is now basically Westeros, minus the dragons, were certainly feeling rather wistful about those halcyon days last month as we were battered with various extremes of weather. Style-wise, this made for a Simon-says-like game of constant outfit swaps, in which our wardrobes veered maniacally between the tropical new arrivals on MR PORTER (camp-collar shirts, linen-mix chinos) and the slightly beleaguered layovers from last winter, which are starting to look like they’ve taken a bit of a pummelling. Honestly, we could all have done with a personal stylist (slash butler, to carry around all the jackets). Alas, not everyone can have such things. Only these guys, below. But don’t they look great for it? Scroll down to see our favourite celebrity outfits from the past 30 days.

Mr Daniel Caesar

Much as MR PORTER lives and breathes the gospel of chinos, we were slightly taken aback by this all-over khaki approach. Nonetheless, the Grammy-nominated musician makes it work by subtly exploring different shades of brown and beige in his hoodie and chinos, and expanding the colour spectrum with his orange and burgundy accessories, which, of course, include a belt bag, as is everyone’s wont these days.

Mr Douglas Booth

A charmingly handsome young British actor (and Style Council Member) in a sharply cut blue blazer, well-pressed chinos and loafers. Comes with free matching socks and flowers. What’s not to like? This is pretty much a foolproof outfit for any smart-casual summer engagement you might care to shake a stick at. Watch and learn.

Mr Mark Ruffalo

It must be nice to have such an onomatopoeic name as “Ruffalo”, which sounds like the sort of thing that might be whispered by a woodland Pokémon. We’ll never know how far this has had an influence on Mr Mark Ruffalo’s decidedly rugged twist on smart casual, above, in which he combines an unstructured black suit with a crewneck sweater and worn pair of boots, but we do know that we like it. Say it with us: Ruffalo. Rrrrrrrrrrruffalo!

Mr Paul Bettany

How on earth do you follow up the unbelievable prestige of appearing on MR PORTER, as Mr Paul Bettany recently did? Yes, we suppose, sauntering along at the premiere of the most successful superhero movie ever might just about cut it. Unfortunately, the galactic backdrop isn’t perhaps the best foil to the actor’s wonderfully summery tailored outfit, but the outfit itself is right on the money. The suit’s sandy tones are perfectly complemented by Mr Bettany’s brown shoes and trademark tinted glasses (you can read more about those in our Journal interview with the Avengers: Infinity War star here). Try to imagine him standing next to the Grand Canal in Venice for full effect.

More commonly seen in a Lycra onesie, this generation’s Spider-Man shows he also knows how to do separates, combining a neat, 1950s-inspired Prada knitted polo shirt with some teal trousers as he spends a rare afternoon not dangling from the sides of various buildings. And talking of Prada…

Mr Darius Johnson

You may have missed the fact that MR PORTER launched an exclusive capsule collection with Prada this April. Naturally, we did everything we could to make sure you didn’t, but you can’t control everything, can you? Anyway, consider this a timely reminder of that fact, and, what’s more, that we hosted a Prada-themed bowling party in New York to celebrate the whole thing. Model Mr Darius Johnson was sporting one of our favourite outfits of the evening, combining a print camp-collar shirt with perfectly faded, perfectly cropped jeans. Simple, yet effective.

Mr Ryan Reynolds

A man of considerable personal taste, Mr Ryan Reynolds always tends to look good. Here he is at the launch of Deadpool 2 in an outfit that you might call suitably irreverent for a movie premiere: chinos, printed shirt, bomber jacket. The message here is something along the lines of “I do these things every day, what’s the big deal?” Which is On-The-Town code for “I’m basically untouchable right now. Ha, ha.”

Mr John Legend

Oh, this? This old thing? Just a bomber jacket from Saint Laurent. I throw it on at the weekends, when I don’t want to get dressed dressed and need something a bit simple and comfortable. Yes, it’s kind of a low-key option. I’ve got a few. I just rotate them. White T-shirt, selvedge jeans. Done. More time for me-time. Ah, to be Mr John Legend, who, we imagine but can’t confirm, says such things as he steps out on a Saturday morning.
