Winter Coats – Staff Picks

From cashmere to corduroy, MR PORTER has the right outerwear to suit any man of style

An overcoat is the most powerful weapon in a man’s sartorial armory in that it is the most visible, and therefore represents the greatest opportunity for making a statement – and plenty of designers are preaching a “more is more” philosophy this winter. From Burberry to Berluti, Sandro to Saint Laurent, big coats are most definitely in.

Whether you choose the oversized and overtly luxurious route or stick to the well-tailored path, we most likely have someone just like you on staff. One of the simple joys of working here at MR PORTER is witnessing all the different pathways to elegance. To provide you with a little expert guidance, we’ve canvassed the views of our diverse team. Read on to find out what they’re favouring this winter.

Why have you chosen this coat?

“When I moved from Los Angeles to New York in 2001, my old GQ colleague Mr Michael Hainey passed along an excellent piece of advice. ‘Your topcoat in New York is like your car in LA,’ he said, alluding to the way that in a cold, urban environment, your coat telegraphs what sort of guy you are. Messrs Thom Whiddett and Luke Sweeney combine classic British tailoring with a modern sensibility, so if you want people to think there goes a thoroughly modern gentleman, I’d drive this midnight blue number.”

What will you be wearing it with?

“Just as every car needs a muffler, I’d slap a bit of crimson and white from fellow Mayfair tailor Richard James onto this rig.”

  • Canali Slim-Fit Super 120s Wool-Flannel Trousers

  • Richard James Printed Cashmere and Silk-Blend Scarf

Why have you chosen this coat?

“Junya Watanabe designs clothes that are more than the sum of their parts. Which is impressive, when you consider just how many parts there tend to be. Take this quilted jacket, for example. It has leather elbow patches, a corduroy collar with a buckled leather strap, tweed panels, cotton-twill zip and button-fastened pockets. It sounds rather like Frankenstein’s monster. The result is anything but. It’s a beautiful, versatile piece of outerwear.”

What will you be wearing it with?

“The tweed panels on this coat give it a heritage workwear feel. I’m happy to stick with that general theme, so I’ll be wearing it with a pair of suede and leather lace-ups from Yuketen – Mr Yuki Matsuda’s cult American shoe brand. We’re very pleased to have been able to welcome him to MR PORTER this season.”

WEAR IT WITH

  • Levi's Made & Crafted Needle Narrow Slim-Fit Denim Jeans

  • Yuketen Leather and Suede Lace-Up Boots

Why have you chosen this coat?

“Camel is being touted as one of this season’s must-have trends, but please don’t let that cloud your judgment. The camel overcoat is not a trend; it’s a classic, and it’ll be just as wearable in one, five or 10 years’ time as it is right now. I love this one from Marni – the brand’s signature boxy fit gives it an effortlessly relaxed feel, and the minimalist design keeps things contemporary.”

What will you be wearing it with?

“This is the kind of coat that can be dressed down just as easily as it can be dressed up. I’ll be wearing it with Stan Smith sneakers, for unexpected ease.”

WEAR IT WITH

  • Marni Wool and Cashmere-Blend Sweatpants

  • adidas Originals Stan Smith Leather Sneakers

Why have you chosen this coat?

“I moved to New York in February this year after a month of travelling around tropical Peru. Thanks to the polar vortex, New York was in the icy grip of the most brutal winter in recent memory. Thanks to US customs, my clothes were delayed in transit. All I had was a suitcase full of shorts and T-shirts while the locals were togged up in Canada Goose parkas. But they’d clearly stripped the poor birds bare for there were no coats left by the time I arrived. Lesson learnt: I’m buying early this winter.”

What will you be wearing it with?

“I’ll be adopting the suave Italian sprezzatura style of combining an arctic parka and heavyweight tailoring. But this winter I’ll change up the footwear from leather-soled monk straps to more practical rubber-soled winter boots such as this no-nonsense pair from Red Wing.”

WEAR IT WITH

  • Richard James Knitted Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater

  • Red Wing Shoes Beckman Leather Boots

Why have you chosen this coat?

“Put simply, this is the ultimate in technical outerwear. What looks like a simple shell jacket is actually a Gore-Tex Pro shell membrane over a Thermatek insulating layer. The hooded outer and liner can be worn separately, which makes it a versatile piece that’s perfect for the London commute – when it’s inevitably raining when I leave the house and boiling when I get on the underground. And it’s so lightweight that you can easily pack it away in a backpack or suitcase.”

What will you be wearing it with?

“The beauty of this coat is that it can be mixed with cutting-edge pieces or worn in a more traditional way. The minimalist design is a reflection of my personal style, so I’ll be keeping it simple with a Sacai plaid shirt, black jeans and sneakers. The drawstring hem on the shirt and the sneakers keep the look sports-inspired.”

WEAR IT WITH

  • Sacai Check Cotton-Flannel Contrast-Hem Shirt

  • Acne Studios Thin Dawn Coated-Denim Jeans

Why have you chosen this coat?

“This reminds me of what an 18th-century French artist might have worn to stomp around the countryside. It was a stand-out piece in the Lemaire showroom and tied to a key trend for oversized, dressing-gown shapes on outerwear we saw from lots of key brands. I love how fluid it looks, and how cosy it feels.”

What would you recommend to wear with it?

“This is best worn open and paired with a slim trouser in order to highlight the generous proportions – of the coat that is! I’d recommend this pinstripe pair from Valentino.”

WEAR IT WITH

  • J.Crew Slim-Fit Button-Down Collar Denim Shirt

  • Valentino Slim-Fit Pinstriped Wool and Cashmere-Blend Trousers

Why have you chosen this coat?

“When it came to considering coats this season, I initially wanted something for fighting the elements. That was before this oversized number by Calvin Klein Collections caught my eye. It is my absolute favourite. It’s luxurious, understated and it fits like a glove… An on-trend, oversized glove.”

What will you be wearing it with?

“I personally never feel obliged to base an outfit around an outerwear piece. A smart coat doesn’t have to be worn over a suit and with smart shoes. Feel free to mix with casual clothes – it’ll work just as well worn over a grey sweater, denim and Nikes as it will with your formal attire.”

WEAR IT WITH

  • Sunspel Loopback Cotton-Jersey Sweatshirt

  • Nike Tier Zero Nike x Fragment Tennis Classic Sneakers

Why have you chosen this coat?

“Massimo Piombo – another Mr P – has built up a big office fanbase since launching on MR PORTER last spring, and I am a fully signed-up member. What makes his clothes unique is ‘the hand’ (as we say in the trade) . They’re cut from his archive of rare bales of cloth that have been carefully sourced from all around the world. This one is a soft baby alpaca blend – we’ve been assured that no soft baby alpacas were harmed in the making of the coat.”

What will you be wearing it with?

“This coat is a true statement piece, so I’ll be paring back the rest of my outfit accordingly. A cashmere rollneck, such as this one from Calvin Klein Collection, fits perfectly.”

WEAR IT WITH

  • Calvin Klein Collection Rollneck Cashmere Sweater

  • Bottega Veneta Intrecciato-Panelled Leather Holdall Bag
