Biography

Mr Ebner was born in the Black Forest in Germany from where he moved to New York City at age 20. He loved the 1990s in Manhattan, especially the nightlife, and was working away in the fashion world. After September 11, he moved back to Germany and Berlin, to start his own fashion magazine Achtung Mode. Achtung Mode represents what's happening creatively in the German-speaking world. An avid lover of football, Mr Ebner also started Sepp Football Fashion, a unique sport style magazine that comes out every two years for the Euro and World Cup. Mr Ebner lives with his wife Lisa and children in the 9th arrondissement in Paris. www.achtung-mode.com

Mr Ebner's Recommendations

note

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“My favourite restaurant at the moment is called Sasaya on Lychener Strasse in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. I would recommend the Bio Yasay, a deconstructed salad of fresh bio vegetables. In Paris, it's Chez Georgette, an owner-run 1960s-decor bistro that has a fantastic fettuccine with a mountain of Burgundy snails as topping.”

note

BEST BAR

“It's called Hackbarth's in Berlin, in the middle of the gallery district Mitte. It hasn't changed its decor in more than 20 years and is what the Germans call a "Kneipe".”

VACATION CHOICE

“I like Portugal a lot for its amazing cove-like beaches, solid seafood and low prices. We like to go to the surfer village Sagres. Columbus set sail for America from there.”

TOP CITY

“At the moment Paris. I moved here three years ago for my wife, Lisa, and I love it. It's the Western world's most preserved city, with the finest urban layout. The beauty of Paris is awesome.”

note

FAVOURITE HOTEL

Hotel Mennini in Milan. A solid three-star hotel in Milan where I have been staying for more than ten years. No other fashion people stay there, invitations don't get lost, family owned and run, they ask about my family, I always get the same room, it's centrally located.”

TYPE OF BAG

“A Dior Homme messenger bag. Sturdy, cool-looking and useful, fits the laptop and magazines as well as a beauty case and minimal wardrobe for an overnight trip.”

note

FAVOURED BRAND

“Helmut Lang, the real Helmut Lang. I still wear all my old clothes and keep bringing them to the tailor to get them fixed up. Perfect cut, military detailing, masculine colors. I have not found a replacement yet. Sometimes Dries Van Noten men's has promise…”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“My suits from my tailor in Vienna. His name is Bernhard Niedersuesz and he has opened his own custom-tailoring atelier right next to the famed Hotel Sacher on Annagasse. 38-year-old Niedersuesz has a knack for fusing fashion with classic tailoring from his experiences with Helmut Lang and Ralph Lauren in New York. He believes that not only the suit and details should look outstanding but the whole experience of getting it made as well. This old-school concept comes to life with his soft shoulder and high waistline, the atelier’s signature. His Viennese silhouette is a narrow three-button suit with double-vents.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“Naturally, my beautiful wife, Lisa. Professionally speaking, I also style women's shoots – I think Charlotte Casiraghi and her mother Caroline are the most beautiful women in the world.”

STYLE ICON

“I'll go for alive. He is on the Council here as well: my friend William Gilchrist (on a good day). Also the Swiss photographer Walter Pfeiffer who is the master of color coordination. Finally, the Swiss creative director Beda Achermann for his German army pants with tailored double-breasted jackets.”

STYLE TIP

“Sleep in your shirt before you wear it. Nothing beats a worn-in look.”

TAILOR

“In Vienna chez Niedersuesz. The German company Regent and its designer Detlev Diehm are my favourite suit supplier in Germany. Regent is the only company in Germany which makes suits one hundred percent by hand.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“I am slowly graduating to shirts again. My motto in my styling work for men is "men without ties". So I have not been wearing shirts but more polos and T-shirts with my suits.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“Again, Mr Bernhard Niedersuesz in Vienna.”

note

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Old Helmut Lang cigarette pants with no pleats.”

note

JEANS BRAND

A.P.C. Standard and No Edition, a new brand done by former Helmut Lang assistant Christian Niessen.”

note

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“All the great German and Swiss brands, briefs from Schiesser and Zimmerli .”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Double-breasted and double-vent. At the moment!”

note

SHOE MAKER

“Ludwig Reiter from Vienna. Their perforated dress shoe.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer. I also use it as a hair-grooming tool.”

note

DREAM CAR

“Lotus Esprit from the James Bond days.”

note

WATCH BRAND

“IWC Fliegerchronograph in need of a Swiss "revision".”

note

BEST BOOK

“Against Method by Paul Feyerabend.”
