How To Dress More Adventurously In 2017

Words by The Daily Team

10 January 2017

Why wear clothes that make you blend in when you can stand out this year?.

We’re all holding firm and staying true to our resolutions in the MR PORTER office. Well, most of us are, anyway. A few members of the team, it must be said, are interpreting the meaning of the word “dry” rather liberally when it comes to their efforts to stay sober in January. The opening month of their year might better be described as damp or even, in some cases, positively soggy.

But resolutions are not all about the negative: cutting out carbs, booze and swearing, for example. Resolutions should also be about adding things – exciting things – to your life. Things don’t have to be so… virtuous. Which brings us nicely to a philosophy some of us espouse regarding the things we plan to wear this year. That is, we solemnly vow to be more adventurous in 2017.

So, here are some items new to MR PORTER today that offer something a little bit different for our wardrobes.

THE LEOPARD-PRINT SWEATER

You could’ve made a big statement in the 1920s – the era when leopard print rose – by wearing a leopard-print coat. Except it wouldn’t have been leopard print, it would probably have been an actual leopard. Which isn’t really the done thing nowadays. Now, whether you’re Mr Keith Richards (a big proponent of the print) or simply a mere mortal who wishes to wear something vibrant, you will, gladly, be wearing an imitation of the animal’s coat. But it will still have the same effect. Much like this cashmere-blend sweater from Marc Jacobs. Just make sure you tame it with something plain on your bottom half.

THE FLORAL SHIRT

From the animal world to the world of flora and fauna – this slim-fit McQ Alexander McQueen shirt will bring a vibrancy to your casual wardrobe like, well, few other things that spring to mind. What’s more, those flowers are not frilly, gentle things. They are thorny and feral. This is not a shy and retiring shirt. This is a floral shirt that means business. So much so, you could dress it up perfectly well with a smart blazer, such as the above nice piece from Sunspel.

THE STRIKING ACCESSORY

Sticking with a floral theme, we come to this rather standout belt from Thom Browne. The saying “God is in the details” springs to mind because, well, details matter, and this belt has lots of them. Now, said details need not necessarily be so, er, striking – and we admit that accessories such as this might not be for everyone – but those who like to add a sense of humour to their look will struggle to find anything more fitting. Wear this belt with some appropriate casual trousers, such as these J.Crew chinos.
