At last night’s Academy Awards, there was glitz, there was glamour, there was no sign of Sean Penn (too busy smoking), and Sinners and One Battle After Another were the big winners (sorry Timothée).
There were also some standout looks from Hollywood’s leading men – Best Actor nominee Leonardo DiCaprio showed up sporting a fancy little moustache. Shades of ivory and champagne appeared to be a theme, including a few brave all-white attempts and a touch of pastel velvet, along with brooches, big trousers and floppy bow ties, or no bow ties at all. And as usual, the after-parties were where the more experimental – or at least colourful – looks were pulled off the stylists’ rails.
Below, we’ve put together a few thoughts from the MR PORTER team, featuring some of our favourite get-ups from the Oscars’ red carpet and beyond.
Michael B Jordan

Some bad news for Michael B Jordan over the weekend – AFC Bournemouth, the Premier League football team he co-owns, could only manage a 0-0 draw against for-the-drop Burnley. Only, wait – he also picked up the big Best Actor prize for his turn in Sinners (both of them). So, swings and roundabouts. Also of note: the custom, all-black, Mandarin-style suit with a gold wallet chain by Louis Vuitton he wore to the event. A singular look for two great performances. – Jim Merrett, Commissioning Editor
Robert Pattinson

You can always trust Robert Pattinson to do his job when it comes to getting dressed for the red carpet. Despite his propensity for zany roles, he takes a more classic-with-a-twist approach to black-tie tailoring. Which, on this occasion, means a custom Dior shawl-collar dinner jacket and swapping out a regular old bow tie for a diamond-encrusted brooch. There’s nothing wrong with a sprinkle of the old razzle-dazzle when you’re out in Hollywood, is there? – Finlay Renwick, Head of Content
Jesse Plemons

Bugonia star Jesse Plemons seems very cool and sure of himself, and it’s no surprise to see him demonstrate a modern way to wear velvet. Here, he’s teamed his Lardini jacket with a sky-blue shirt, a diamond-point bow tie and a tiny brooch. The blue of his shirt works really well with his hair colour – it’s fresh and uplifting, and so much more interesting than white. – Benedict Browne, Style Director
Ryan Coogler

The winner of Best Original Screenplay and in the conversation for Best Director and Best Picture, Ryan Coogler also wore Louis Vuitton to collect his gong. And as with his film, Sinners, his look was all about attention to detail. A clean, classic tuxedo was given a nudge thanks to a white bow tie, lapel pins and the shape of a guitar subtly braided into his hair. – JM
Wagner Moura

While he didn’t pull off the Best Actor upset for his magnetic role in The Secret Agent, Wagner Moura can console him with the fact that he turned up to the Oscars looking every bit the leading man. Wearing custom ZEGNA, he had a bit of flare in his trousers – a recurring theme for this red-carpet season – and went with an abstract approach to the clean white “air tie” look. Nice brooch, too. This is how you push formalwear a bit without looking over the top. – FR
Paul Anthony Kelly

Our admiration for Brunello Cucinelli is no secret, and it was great to see the man of the moment, Love Story star Paul Anthony Kelly, wear a bespoke dinner suit from the brand. It’s refreshing to see a velvet jacket in a chestnut-brown hue – it’s usually the classic bottle green, burgundy or dark blue tones. Anthony Kelly’s lapels are rounded and strong, with subtle piping around the edges. He looks every inch the Brunello guy. – BB
Nick Cave

Nominated for the title track for Train Dreams – but shunned in favour of KPop Demon Hunters’ “Golden” – Nick Cave lost none of his shine. Wearing a sharp Valentino Garavani suit, he stuck to a style that works for him – slim-cut, high collar and a classic necktie. – JM
Joe Alwyn

The overall style mood of the Oscars, at least from a menswear perspective, erred on the conservative side, but it was nice to see a handful of guys experiment with their neckwear and accessories. As mentioned, there were many brooches, but also some raffish takes on bow ties. Joe Alwyn, who starred in Hamnet, was also wearing Valentino, looking a bit like a stylish 1970s dandy. Wide trousers, wide lapel, foppish bow tie? Check, check and check. Get him in the Bryan Ferry biopic. Someone fancies making a Bryan Ferry biopic soon, right? – FR
