The Sneaker Drop: New Shoes From Adidas, New Balance And Suicoke

4 July 2022

For many, this is the time of the year when the only thing you want to dip your toes into is likely cool and wet. Or, if you really have to wear shoes, they’ll be of the open-toed variety. We hear you, which is why as well as the latest sneaker releases, this month, we’re including a pair of sandals. Don’t @ us, it’s hot. In short: avoid sliding into our DMs, try some slides instead.

MOTO-VCHT by Suicoke X Carhartt

Carhartt is, of course, the American workwear brand celebrated for its hardwearing, robust, utilitarian clothing. Although how you’re supposed to operate heavy machinery wearing a pair of these is a good question. However, if you’re on your feet all day, Suicoke’s custom Vibram cushioned sole will be up to the task. The cult Japanese sandal-maker has previously teamed up with everyone from Tyler, the Creator’s Golf Wang to Neighborhood and A Bathing Ape, so this collaboration isn’t out of place. If you’re looking to give your toes a bit of a breather this summer, you can’t go wrong with these.

Mexicana by adidas Originals

The 1970 World Cup was notable for a number of reasons. The first tournament held outside of Europe and South America, it was won by a Brazilian team often regarded as the best ever assembled. It also saw the introduction of adidas’ legendary Telstar football, along with these, the Mexicana shoes. A tweak of the flagship Gazelle silhouette, the Mexicana employed bright yellow pigskin suede, offset with contrast black stripes, laces and heel tabs. While the colourway has resurfaced since, reissues of the shoe itself are unheard of, making this a rare drop at the end of this month – and one to schedule in your calendar now.

RC Elite MSRCELSO by New Balance X Stone Island

New Balance has always been a serious player when it comes to running shoes. But its recent run of canny collaborations have repositioned it as a cult style brand, too. This latest team up with innovative Italian streetwear label Stone Island is a case in point. Developed alongside the Boston brand’s Tokyo design studio – called TOKYO DESIGN STUDIO, as it happens – this shoe sees the alliance as more of a sparring competition, with both jostling for real estate. The burgundy leather upper has been hacked away to reveal zingy mesh underlays, playing to the signatures of the two brands.

Forum 84 LG by adidas Originals

While now synonymous with Nike and his own offshoot brand, once upon a time, Mr Michael Jordan played in a pair of – whisper it – adidas shoes. Trialling for the US Olympic team in 1984, months before his NBA career kicked off, the basketball legend turned out in Forum high-tops. And while the German sportswear brand passed up the chance to sponsor Jordan, and has been kicking itself ever since, it has done the right thing with this shoe. Recent reissues of the OG sneaker in its low-top guise have seen the mid-1980s silhouette gain a cult following. And this edition in Carolina Blue, the colour of the University of North Carolina – an institution known for nurturing b-ball talent, including one Michael Jordan – won’t hurt the cause.
