All We Want For Christmas Is…

Words by The MR PORTER Team

Two hours ago

Take her at her word and all Mariah Carey famously wants this Christmas is you. Men, however, can be more difficult. They say they already have everything. Or worse: they say they want nothing. Honestly, who is the real diva here? Well, don’t say we don’t give you anything, but to aid your gift buying for the guy in your life, we asked the guys in ours what they really, really want (sorry, another assertive 1990s female pop track) this festive season. And we wouldn’t take “nothing” for an answer. Here, then, are the gifts the MR PORTER Team would love to unwrap on the big day.

The David Yurman 18-karat gold chain bracelet

Jeremy Langmead, Brand Director

I really covet this modestly priced (ahem) 18-karat chunky gold chain bracelet from David Yurman. You just know the weight will be reassuringly substantial. The chunky links will be pleasingly tactile. And it commands presence without being shouty. It’s not a shy piece, but neither will it dominate. It will look so good peering out from the bottom of a navy wool jacket sleeve, or a simple grey cashmere crew-neck sweater. A bit of glimmer and glamour that will certainly brighten the life – and outfit – of anyone who owns it. Hopefully me.

The Cartier Tank Louis Cartier 18-karat gold watch

Kit Swann, Fashion Editor

Nothing gets me feeling festive more than dressing up. Whether I’m heading to the pub to see some mates or attending Christmas work drinks, I always enjoy putting in a little extra effort and giving some thought to what I’m wearing. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a better way to elevate an outfit and bring a sense of occasion than with the right watch. Not just any watch, though – specifically, a dress watch. I’d almost certainly be wearing a shirt, so there’s no better style. It’s designed to sit neatly on the wrist, slipping under the cuff. And, for me, the Cartier Tank is the most iconic dress watch of all, so that’s exactly what I’d be hoping to find wrapped up under the tree. This particular model, with its sunray dial, couldn’t be more suited to some chic party dressing. So, Santa (or my wife…), no pressure!

The Mr P. brushed cashmere sweater

Jim Merrett, Commissioning Editor

Expunge all thoughts of lurid acrylic monstrosities with sallow reindeer slapped on them. A real festive sweater should be something that can add a pop of colour to your wardrobe throughout the year, not just darkest days of winter – for life, and not just Christmas. With that in mind, this cheery piece by our own label, Mr P., caught my eye. Partly because of the striking red, yes. But also the tactile handle of the brushed cashmere, which comes with our Consciously Crafted seal of approval. Meaning it’s looking out for this planet – and counter to the Star Trek trope, sure to last longer than a new face wearing one on an alien planet, too.
