What to wear to watch the World Cup.

The style of the  – once much maligned by fashion and society in general – have been increasingly embraced by the fashion industry in recent years. Yet, with the 2018  in full swing, it only seems right that  should honor the realm of . Call it a sportswear revival, call it cultural fetishisation, call it whatever you like – but it’s a  popping up all over the place.

At the spring/summer shows, designers such as Mr Pierpaolo Piccioli at , Mr John Galliano at  and Mr Alessandro Michele at  eschewed a modern approach to the beautiful game, preferring to keep things strictly 1990s. Why this particular decade? Well, fashion’s “20-year rule” – whereby trends have a habit of repeating themselves two decades later – makes right now 1990s 2.0. It makes sense given that the industry’s top designers spend their formative years in the era that gave us grunge,  and trip-hop. So, in terms of sportswear, that mean’s rib-knit , logos from football’s heydey and  and matching  aplently.

Yet, rather than go head-to-toe hooligan, the trick here is to mix high and low: slot zip-ups under sharp , smart  with unstructured blazers and clean white  and logoed-tees with tailored  and . Is it something that'll live beyond 2018’s World Cup? Too early to say. But judging by the insatiable appetite for retro sportswear in general, more brands may well follow suit.
