Three Things You Can Expect From Prada On MR PORTER

Words by Mr Adam Welch

The less-is-more jacket, more-is-more print shirt, sunglasses and Derby shoes in our edit of the Prada collection, new on MR PORTER today.

Put two people who describe their profession as “fashion editor” in a room, suggest a topic of conversation, and you can guarantee they’ll fundamentally disagree on the matter in question, then proceed to fall out over some other silly thing and swear never to talk again. Yes, they can be tedious individuals, and designers’ collections frequently divide opinion. The one exception to this rule is, of course, Prada – everyone in the style world tends to agree that the Italian brand, founded in 1913 in Milan by Mr Mario Prada, and currently helmed by his visionary granddaughter Ms Miuccia Prada, is unfailingly brilliant. And they’re right, for once.

Since the early 1990s, when Ms Prada overhauled the historic house with a sharp, minimal, yet appealingly gawky new aesthetic, Prada’s collections have remained at the forefront of style, leading the way for each season’s trends. But don’t let the unanimous approval of the style elite put you off – the brand’s menswear line, which we proudly welcome to MR PORTER today, is as thoroughly wearable as it is razor-sharp. Scroll down for a brief recap of what to expect from this storied brand, if you’re not already among its rabid fanbase, as well as how to wear it well.

Few brands do the less-is-more approach better than Prada – the below jacket, based on a 1950s blouson shape, is a prime example of this fact. Rendered in a sturdy wool gabardine, it’s both perfectly plain and intriguingly off-kilter, thanks to the subtle proportions of the oversized collar and slightly cropped hemline. It’s the kind of jacket you can wear with anything, really, but it will look particularly crisp (and impeccably restrained) with a plain white T-shirt. Prada does a rather nice line in those too, of course.

Prada is a Yin and Yang affair: on the one hand it’s sober and restrained, on the other it often issues the most vibrant, humorous and wry prints of the season. For AW16, the theme in this department is – broadly speaking – sailing, with shirts emblazoned with cascading prints featuring rolling waves and battling galleons. For the more colour-averse among you, it also comes in a monochrome version, but we particularly like the boxy cut and lurid hues of this camp-collared variation. Tame it with a pair of grey wool trousers.

There’s a pleasing heft to Prada’s accessories that nicely counterbalances the slim-fitting, minimal tendencies of its clothing. Both these round-framed acetate glasses, and these sublimely chunky, contrast-stitch Derby shoes will add an air of studied quirkiness to your outfit, without tipping the whole thing into “statement” territory.
