THE JOURNAL

We already know that Valentine’s Day will be celebrated a little differently this year. For starters, you likely won’t have spent the last two weeks frantically attempting to find a restaurant reservation (on that note, if a home-cooked meal is on the cards, you might want to brush up with our series on eating in). See, you’re already sighing with relief. More tricky, however, is deciding what gift to bestow upon your beloved. As always, we’re here to offer a helping hand in that department. Here are 10 swoon-worthy presents we’re sure they’ll love (almost as much as they do you).
01.
The proper pen

Sir Phillip Pullman, author of the His Dark Materials trilogy, is a devotee of Montblanc pens, praising them for their balance, beauty and comfort. President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama are also reportedly big fans. But even if your other half doesn’t use theirs to write a fantasy epic or sign executive orders – instead scribbling a hurried note to remind you to pick up some milk – their thoughts will turn to you every time they use it.
02.
The classic watch

A watch is no small gift. If you’re contemplating giving one to your partner it’s likely that your relationship has already stood the test of time, and a Valentine’s gift isn’t going to make or break it. Still, you want to get it right: Panerai’s recently released Luminor Marina comes in a handsome shade of blue that few men could say no to (bonus points if it matches his eyes). But if you’re still struggling to settle on the perfect piece, just reach out to one of our experts at watches@mrporter.com.
03.
The forever necklace

Jewellery is something they’ll treasure for posterity, but it’s also, admittedly, a bit of risk. If you’re not sure what they’ll take a shine to, then keep it simple with something similar to Foundrae’s Dream pendant and chain, which is made from 18-karat gold, embossed with understated arrow and star emblems and set with the tiniest array of diamonds.
04.
The sultry fragrance

Fragrance is seen as a classic Valentine’s gift for good reason – it makes an excellent present, and one your recipient won’t typically treat themselves to. Settle for something suitably sultry and you can hardly go wrong. TOM FORD’s sensual-smelling Beau de Jour will go down well with even the most discerning beau.
05.
The thoughtful candle

You can’t very well have a candlelit dinner without a candle, can you? The Italian homeware designer Fornasetti produces some of the highest quality in the world, but it’s really all about the package they come in. This one, decorated with painted lips, will make a fitting centrepiece for many date nights to come.
06.
The playful socks

07.
The fun ping pong set

Both stuck indoors with nothing to do (apart from that)? A little healthy competition might liven things up on Valentine’s night. Treat yourselves to this tonally appropriate set from The Art of Ping Pong and see who comes out on top. Game, set, match.
08.
The traditional boardgame

If, on the other hand, you’re the sort of twosome who prefer a slightly less frenetic pace, but can’t bear to hear the Netflix ident booming at you for another night in a row, a classic boardgame will see you through many lockdowns – sorry, we mean romantic nights in – to come. Try Metier’s handmade leather backgammon set on for size.
