If you’ve barely left the house in the past six months, you might be forgiven for wondering why we’re speaking of these things called shoes. But speak of them we must, as the change of weather means casting aside slides for something a little sturdier. Built for environments where one might encounter rain, sleet and snow, winter shoes come with the kind of design specifications you’d expect from a new car – robust bodywork, reinforced aspects and soles courtesy of the guys responsible for making tyres. The point being that, wherever you roam this season, your feet are in good hands. Here are five of the best pairs for winter 2020.

01.

The Goodyear-welted suede boots

These Angler boots from Yuketen are off the hook. But instead of getting caught up in bad fishing puns, let’s just enjoy the fact that these handcrafted, textured suede boots with leather trim and Goodyear-welted rubber soles are such a strong blend of form and function that, in a pair of these, you won’t need to fish around for compliments (sorry).

02.

The chunky Chelsea boots

Exceedingly hard-wearing and impossibly good looking, these black leather Chelsea boots from Bottega Veneta are ideal for snow-day adventurers and lazy loungers alike (look mum, no laces). Plus, with a considerable heel, they’ve got serious goth vibes, should you decide to spend the dark days of winter indoors listening to The Cure. All are valid life choices.

03.

The stylish hiking boots

On a hike? Going trekking? Or so old school you call a walk a walk? Whichever way you frame the business of putting one foot in front of the other, these Moncler leather boots will get you there in some style. Substantial and sleek, made with scuff-resistant pebble-grain leather, they’re good to go wherever you choose to.

04.

The comfiest suede chukka boots

We could tell you – because it is our job – that these suede chukka boots with Vibram rubber soles are great for outdoor graft. But after a hard day at the style coalface, we like nothing better than to slip into a pair of these Mr P. exclusives (see – always working) to unwind. With insulating shearling lining, they’ve got downtime written all over the inside of them.

05.

The WFH leather brogues

If we were wearing flip-flops right now, we’d be sluggish about this last bit of writing. Instead, with our Officine Creative brogues on, we’re feeling suitably pumped to finish this piece off in style. So here goes: a fantastic WFH option, these brogues complement casualwear while adding that formal touch to help you work smarter. Job, as they say, done.
