Auralee has an eye for brilliant fabric. The brand was founded by fashion designer Mr Ryota Iwai in 2015, and has built a reputation for creating relaxed clothing in muted colours that is marked by an incredible commitment to the materials it uses.
Tightly woven wools, satin georgettes, crinkly linens and cloudy cottons are used to make clothes that are relaxed in silhouette, and come in an ice-cream shop spectrum of colours. Usually we’d sniff at apricot and pistachio as pretentious ways to describe clothes that were pale orange or green, but for Auralee, they somehow feel right.
“For this season, we adopted light colour especially a lot of pale tones,” said Mr Iwai. “We expanded the collection with the balance of variety, using classic patterns and old-fashioned colours, but on the other hand, the material is modern.”
Below, Mr Iwai takes us through three of his favourite pieces from this season, and why the fabric they’re made from is so special.
The shirt
Camp-collar shirts might be one of 2019’s biggest summer staples, but not all of them are made equal. “This is a satin georgette that uses a very fine count of cotton for the warp and weft, and has a solid weave,” explains Mr Iwai. “It’s an elegant material that is ever-so-slightly sheer, and has a washable finish.”
The overshirt
“This overshirt is characterised by its mix of high-quality wool and silk, which is uniquely thin, shiny and high-quality and lends it a gauzy feel,” explains Mr Iwai. Perfect for warmer climes, it’s light and airy and will do the groundwork in smartening up your summer holiday wardrobe.
The sweater
Your average woolly sweater this is not. “It’s made from a twill-knit in which extra-fine count yarn has been heavily twisted, meaning that the yarn is packed together tightly,” says Mr Iwai. The result is a dense but tactile sweater that is impossibly soft, and is a reliable option for chilly days or evenings. It’ll look good with anything, but we recommend wearing it with a relaxed pair of drawstring trousers.
