THE JOURNAL
God forbid a man has a hobby. For some of us, an enthusiastic interest in the output of visvim is our vice – and we’re very much here that. For Hiroki Nakamura, the founder of the cult Japanese label, his calling, aside from clothes, is vintage cars. “I just love how they are designed, how they are made and how you feel when you drive [them],” he tells MR PORTER. “Driving vintage cars, racing and motorsports… It’s my passion. That’s what I do.”
“Once you’re in a car and you drive it, you feel the pureness”
There is a slower side to this – the tinkering and the maintenance – which only helps build anticipation for what running a vintage sportscar is really about: the speed and connection to the road. Nakamura’s pride and joy is an Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ, an exceptionally rare and rarefied racing model from the mid 1960s. An everyday runner, it isn’t. You don’t own this car for its reliability; rather, the thrill of the occasion when you take it out for a spin.
Featuring a tubular chassis and a lightweight aluminium body made by the much-celebrated Italian coachbuilder Zagato, the TZ quickens the pulse even when it is stationary. “The car from that period, especially, everything is made by hand,” Nakamura notes. “It’s just a craft. It’s a human touch.”
Nakamura’s pursuits with fast cars have rubbed off on his work, with motorsports a theme that often underpins visvim’s clothes. This is especially true of the brand’s new collaboration with MR PORTER, a 27-piece collection that tears out of the starting grid from today. The styling and details borrow heavily from mid-century racing. But so, too, does the manufacture, aligning with that hand-made sense of craft.
“Once you’re in a car and you drive it, you feel the pureness,” Nakamura says. What does he get from this experience? “A big smile.”
The same could be said once you try on the clothes.
