What’s New: Is It Too Early To Buy Shorts?

Words by The Daily Team

3 April 2019

There was a man who used to work for NET‑A‑PORTER who would wear shorts to the office every single day, no matter the weather or the company he kept. Now, on the MR PORTER editorial desk, we are constantly complaining about the temperature of the office, which is generally on the toasty side. But we doubt we would resort to such sartorial measures. Why? Because, unless you are a footballer or a gymnast, there is something about wearing shorts in a professional environment that just feels wrong. Regardless of whether you would class your office as formal, corporate or downright relaxed, shorts tend to imbue the wearer with a certain level of immaturity. It is hard to take a man in a pair of shorts seriously. Unless you are on a beach, or in a park and the sun is shining. But then, what’s there to be serious about in such circumstances anyway?

So, although we are introducing a whole new raft of shorts onto MR PORTER today, don’t get too excited. Think carefully before you invest in them. These plaid seersucker swim shorts by Onia are perfect for lazing by the pool, for example. And this cotton twill pair by Mr P. will serve you well if it feels like spring this weekend. You could even wear this check pair by Paul Smith on holiday if you wanted something a little smarter. But remember: beware of ditching your trousers in the workplace (either entirely, or for shorts). And, if you’re in the UK, while it might look sunny, it’s still a little nippy. So proceed with caution. Otherwise, check out five of our favourite pairs from today’s upload below. Alternatively, shop all of What’s New here.
