Your New Favourite Tailoring Brand

A first look at the sleek tailoring from P Johnson.

Usually in our What’s New roundup, we focus on a few pieces of clothing that have caught our eye and attempt to corral them into a theme that’s a bit more specific and helpful than “stuff we particularly like today”. This time around, we’re turning our attention to a brand we are pleased to welcome on site today – P Johnson. Established in Sydney, P Johnson (named after the tailor Mr Patrick Johnson) now has its workshop in the Apuan Alps in northern Tuscany – a welcome move, given it can now benefit from Italy’s fastidious approach to craftsmanship. From the very beginning, comfort and fit have been buzzwords for the designer, and each piece of clothing is made by hand with an emphasis on simplicity. Here, we draw out some of the items that best represent the company’s ethos, all of which are available on MR PORTER from today.

Given that Mr Johnson’s expertise lies in tailoring, it seems appropriate to begin by discussing some of the suits made by the Australian designer, whose philosophy when it comes to formalwear is something we can comfortably get on board with. “You should be able to wear a suit in the same way that you wear pyjamas: unconsciously,” says Mr Johnson. Indeed, this particular example may well be our new favourite summer suit. If the striking colour doesn’t win you over, then the Italian-made, lightweight fabric, which rather greedily blends cotton, wool and silk, certainly will. Thumbs up from us.

Sticking with the smart theme, this P Johnson blazer takes the idea of unconscious wearing to a new level. The sprezzatura-style jacket is unstructured, made with linen and half-lined, so if it weren’t for the azure-blue hue, you may forget you’re wearing it entirely. Pair it with these light trousers, also from the brand, and you’d be hard pressed to find a more authoritative smart summer look.

Formalwear is not the only area of menswear that interests P Johnson, and it is not the only area it excels in creating, either – as is evidenced by this casual shirt. Made in naturally breathable linen with a Mandarin collar and soft candy stripes, it’s a summer shirt with a difference, especially if you consider the pearlescent buttons, which will elevate your appearance just a touch. Pare it down for a laidback look with something simple, such as these dark jeans by Paul Smith.
