THE JOURNAL
Mr Johannes Huebl is one of the most photographed men on New York’s social circuit. He swears by La Mer to ensure he doesn’t look too shiny.
Each month, MR PORTER publishes a regular feature called “On The Town” – a photographic roundup of the world’s best-dressed men. Although we haven’t totted it up exactly, we’d be willing to wager that the New York-based German model Mr Johannes Huebl, 39, must be one the top five most-featured. This is a testament to a) how many events he is invited to; and b) how consistently well he dresses – all the more impressive considering that, unlike most red-carpet regulars, the MR PORTER Style Council member doesn’t have a stylist telling him what to wear. He dresses himself.
You might think a man who knows he is going to be photographed wherever he goes – especially when he is with his wife, the model and entrepreneur Ms Olivia Palermo – would spend a long time preening in the bathroom before going out. But Mr Huebl’s grooming routine is surprisingly efficient. “It’s very simple – and very German!” he laughs.

Mr Huebl’s skincare essential is La Mer’s The Moisturizing Matte Lotion. “Like many people, my face can get a little shiny sometimes, which isn’t always the best when I get photographed,” says Mr Huebl. “I would never wear a powder or anything similar to take the shine away, but this matte moisturiser does a very good job of keeping the skin hydrated without it looking greasy.” His other go-to product is the La Mer’s The Eye Concentrate, which reduces the appearance of dark circles and fine lines around the eyes thanks to its iron-rich mineral formula. “I apply a small amount of the cream under the eyes using the applicator and then I use my fingertip to gently rub it in – because the skin is so delicate here.”

It’s good manners to make an effort and if I feel good about what I am wearing it puts me in the right mood for a good night out
Mr Huebl likes to dress up when he goes out. “Of course it depends on where I am going and what the event is, but if it is a fashion event, I usually like to wear something smart – often a jacket and tie,” he says. “It’s good manners to make an effort and if I feel good about what I am wearing it puts me in the right mood for a good night out.”
