Last-Minute Packing Essentials For Your Summer Vacation

25 July 2018

The holiday items to order now and sling in your luggage before it’s too late.

Perhaps you’ve been yearning for your annual holiday all year and those wistful feelings have obscured all the practical necessities. Perhaps you’ve hit mid-July, the back spasms and nightmares about paper trays and inboxes have properly set in, and you’ve decided to book an urgent getaway for next weekend. Either way, if you’re reading this, we can only imagine that you’re travelling soon, don’t have anything you need, and are hoping to stock up fast. Well, you’ve come to the right place. Take advantage of MR PORTER’s speedy delivery times by picking up some of the key summer items on the below check list. You won’t regret it when you arrive at your destination thoroughly prepared to slip into the pool/sea/Jacuzzi and finally turn that blasted phone off.

These shades from Bottega Veneta are essentially square framed, but have a slightly rounded shape to the lenses, which will make them suitable for many a face shape (see our full guide to getting the right sunglasses for your face shape here). There’s also something particularly appealing and holiday-ish about their warm amber colour and translucent, tortoiseshell-esque finish.

Just as it’s sometimes easiest to hide in plain sight, it also can be easy, when packing, to forget about the things that are the most obvious. By which we mean: you can’t go travelling without a suitcase, but you might find out that you don’t, in fact, have one to hand. For such circumstances, we would suggest you splash out and invest in a sturdy example from Fabbrica Pelleterie Milano, so you don’t end up in this pickle again. Protected by an aluminium shell, the interior is furnished with a range of handy straps and dividers (all leather, no less), that should not only help you pack, but ensure that you pack well.

Yes, you’re out of the office, but that doesn’t mean you should wander around foreign parts in a pair of beaten-up old sneakers. Instead, try a new pair from Common Projects, safe in the knowledge that their minimalist stylings will make them incredibly versatile, whatever the weather or situation. This particular version – inspired by an old-school skate shoe – is exclusive to MR PORTER.

Hopefully we don’t need to lecture you on the necessity of shorts when it comes to a summer break. In place of this lesson, though, we can offer some judicious advice on which pair to go for with both style and versatility in mind. And that would be something a little like this example from Incotex, an Italian brand that has well and truly mastered such casual staples. The subtle pleats here will allow your bottom half a little more room to breathe, while the turn-ups, we feel, are utterly getaway appropriate. What’s more the colour – a muted olive – will go with almost anything.

Yes, you can never have enough plain T-shirts, especially when travelling, but why be plain all the time? We at MR PORTER have worked hard to make sure the cut, fit and feel of the T-shirts offered by our own brand Mr P. are as close to perfect as possible. But we know that sometimes you need go-faster stripes as well. This particular example is garment dyed in a subtle off-white colour, and embellished with a retro graphic redolent of 1970s sportswear.

Of course one of the most important things to bring with you on your travels is appropriate SPF skincare. But don’t ignore the benefits of after sun, too. A product such as this from Sisley – Paris, the family-run brand renowned for its exceptional skincare range, will help to soothe your skin after a day on the beach, making sure that your tan doesn’t come with a side order of dehydration and scaliness. What’s more, one of the many effects of its active ingredients, which include shea butter, vitamin E and pro-vitamin B5, is to substantially prolong your tan. So you can be extra smug when you arrive back.

Picking swimwear is a nuanced business, but if you’re setting sail in 48 hours and need something that you know will work, we can thoroughly recommend this pair from Hartford. With their neutral blue colour, elasticated waistband and mid-thigh length, they will suit almost anyone. Which means, ultimately, you can stop thinking about it and get on with your vacation. Bon voyage!
