A Vetements T-shirt will make you stand out from the crowd
Top-end new clothes at a fraction of full price – what’s not to love?.
How to put this delicately… it’s time to start shopping again. Yes, you may groan, but the MR PORTER sale is emphatically here, and it’s bigger and better than ever. Now is the time to snap up those choice items you secretly wished were waiting under the tree for you this Christmas, or to make the most of the steep discounts – up to 50 per cent on selected items – and scoop up a late present for relatives not yet seen this festive period. If you’re savvy about this thing, you’ve already populated your Wish Lists with the things you’re hoping to scoop. But in case you find yourself somewhat less prepared (kudos to you for shaking off the consumerist expectations of society by the way), we at MR PORTER have put together a choice selection of sale pieces that undoubtedly deserve your attention. Start here, and may your sale adventures be fruitful.
A bargain blazer
At full price, this elegant but charmingly unstructured blazer from Boglioli represented very good value for a piece of genuine Italian-made tailoring. At 50 per cent off, it’s a no-brainer. Rendered in a cosy mélange virgin wool, it’s the perfect low-key smart piece for winter, but will be versatile enough to see you through to summer. Wear it with a blue shirt from Paul Smith – a wardrobe staple if ever we saw one.
A deal on down
Mr Junya Watanabe’s collaboration with outdoor brand The North Face for AW17 yielded some truly fantastic pieces, and this down jacket is one of the best among them. Though based on a classic North Face style, it’s both puffier and more detailed than its inspiration, and comes with supremely cosy handwarmer pockets, a pleasing orange lining and, most eye-catchingly, an oversized, deconstructed logo in a vinyl-like finish that curves around the side and back. Complete the techy look with a pair of knitted sneakers from performance-focused sneaker brand APL Athletic Propulsion Labs.
An underpriced overshirt
If there’s one thing for certain about the wares of US brand Filson, it’s that they’re built to last. In fact, the company, which boasts a 120-year history of producing products of what it calls “rugged quality”, focusing on two signature fabrics: oiled tin cloth and mackinaw wool. The above overshirt is an example of one such classic, a wool style first patented in 1914. What we’re getting at here is, that, given people have been wearing such things very happily for more than 100 years, you probably won’t regret picking up this particular piece, especially at this price. Wear it with a pair of boots – while for the country, you might need something a little sturdier, a pair of classic Common Projects Chelsea boots will do perfectly well for more urban adventures.
A bomber on a budget
The bomber jacket, formerly worn mostly by punks and other such angry youths, is now an everyday staple, thanks to such elegant and refined variations on the form such as the above from Mr John Elliott. Add it now to your casual wardrobe and save yourself the effort (and expense) of buying something similar at full price next spring, eh? It will look particularly good with these garment-dyed corduroy trousers from Paris’ Officine Generale.
The Value Vêtements
Yes, we’re well aware that, as much as Vetements is unquestionably the brand du jour, it’s not, how shall we put it, that easy on the pocket. Consider this a timely opportunity, therefore, to acquire a piece of fashion history (and no doubt it’s future) at a more accessible price point. Also: imagine the shocked looks when you wear this, and a pair of Balmain biker jeans, to your polite New Year’s Eve party. Now that’s priceless.
