On every Christmas gift list, there are the acquaintances, colleagues and cousins thrice removed for whom a smaller gift is more than adequate. A spa voucher and copy of the latest Booker Prize winner for the mother-in-law, a tin of tea for the chaps who come round every other week to clean the windows, and so on.

At the other end of the scale, there is the person for whom a pair of socks doesn’t quite cut it (even if they are very nice socks.) When it comes to showing that special someone you truly care, there really is no better gesture than jewellery. It’s time-honoured, timeless and truly personal. Even if you don’t go down the bespoke route, there are engravings, birthstones, zodiac signs and initials to consider as ways of making the gift truly theirs.

And if jewellery is what you’re after, then you’re in the right place. MR PORTER recently launched its men’s fine jewellery department, which features some of the most exciting and in-demand jewellery designers in the world. Here, we’ve highlighted 10 of them, along with an item of jewellery from each.

Handmade in east London and exclusively available on MR PORTER, Duffy Jewellery’s zodiac necklaces are objects of beautiful simplicity. Featuring a coin-shaped pendant made from 18-carat gold and hand-etched with an individual symbol of the zodiac, they make wonderful personalised gifts – assuming you buy the right one, of course. Make sure your double-check his birthday.

Vada is a relatively new brand, having been founded in 2013, but its jewellery designs already feel like future heirlooms. Its Bubble line smooths away the edges on faceted gemstones to leave a soft, rounded appearance that contrasts against the toughness of the materials. This 18-carat gold ring, set with a marble-like aquamarine – the birthstone for March – is one of the highlights of the collection.

Artful imperfection and irregularity are the hallmarks of Healers Fine Jewelry, a collaboration between Parisian creatives Ms Anaïs Rheiner and Mr Thibaud Etcheberry. There is a pleasing handmade quality to each of its pieces, as illustrated by the metalwork of these eye-catching citrine earrings.

Consider this one an initial investment. Foundrae’s 18-carat gold Sister Hook bracelet is designed to hold the brand’s medallions, each of which symbolises a certain quality or characteristic. The idea is that you combine these medallions to tell your own story. For a romantic gesture and a show of commitment, why not buy the bracelet now and make a promise to add a medallion each year?

Carolina Bucci’s playful Forte bracelets remind us of the beaded friendship bracelets we used to make for each other at school. They’re rather more luxurious than the ones we remember – we certainly didn’t have the budget for white-gold beads when we were kids – but the spirit of friendship remains.

It’s fair to say most men still prefer simplicity and subtlety when it comes to jewellery. If that describes your recipient, then OLE LYNGGAARD COPENHAGEN’s Life bracelet should fit the bill. An understated piece that can be worn anywhere and with anything, it’s a gateway into the world of fine jewellery for men who maybe aren’t quite ready to jump in at the deep end.

The contemporary Milanese jewellery brand EÉRA incorporates snap-hooks, carabiners, keys and other functional designs into its range of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. This Tokyo necklace plays on the form of an ID-tag necklace with a diamond-encrusted clasp and colourful, dégradé-finish pendant. It’s just the thing for the man who wants something a little bit different.

A new arrival to MR PORTER, as of last week, John Hardy has been designing jewellery on the Indonesian island of Bali since 1975. A good place to start is with its rope-like chains, which are handwoven by John Hardy’s artisan collective and inspired by traditional Balinese jewellery-making techniques. This one, with a loop and lobster-clasp fastening, is our current favourite.

The Brazilian-born, London-educated jewellery designer Mr Fernando Jorge is known for his fluid, sculptural style that transforms hard metal and stone into something soft and sensuous. His Cushion pendant is a case in point – the name says it all. In 18-carat gold and set with a large lapis lazuli, it’s a great gift for someone with blue eyes.

Is he the kind of guy who likes to make a statement? If so, SHAY is a name to remember. This Los Angeles-based mother-daughter jewellery design duo specialises in spectacular chain-link bracelets studded with rainbow-coloured gemstones and diamonds, but it also does safer, less outré pieces, too. This blackened gold and diamond tennis bracelet is a simple, elegant piece and a relatively risk-free choice.
