THE JOURNAL

Skiing conditions can be perfect at this time of year (check out the best places to stay here), so it seems apt that we highlight one of our favourite brands in the business of snow, ice and freezing cold temperatures. Moncler has been crafting apparel for Alpine pursuits since 1952. With a focus on innovation, technical fabrics and creative designs via its Moncler Genius project, the brand produces skiwear that marries performance with style and, more recently, style that breaks the mould. Tie-dye is not just for the runways, it seems. Here are three ways to style out your next ski trip.
01.
To dye for
Just when you thought tie-dye might be fading into the background, Moncler kicks things into high gear. This tonal-blue ski jacket and matching trousers combine the technical nous of the Grenoble offshoot with the modern aesthetics of the main line. Designed to protect from harsh mountain weather, the jacket’s shell is made from breathable fabric that provides insulation, while the seams are taped together to keep out moisture. The trousers have internal gaiters that can be hooked to your ski boots and an elasticated drawstring waistband. If you want to have fun on the slopes, you can’t go wrong with loud-as-you-like tie-dye.
02.
Fringe benefits
According to Mr Sandro Mandrino, head of design at Moncler Grenoble, the new collection is an experiment in technical innovation and unexpected fabric combinations. Take this quilted jacket with brown suede panels and fringe detail, for example, which adds a Western touch to the glossy padded style the brand is known for. There’s an interior pocket for a mobile phone, hand guards to keep your mitts warm are hidden in the sleeve cuffs and the jacket is lined with faux shearling for maximum cosiness. For a base layer that’s as eye-catching as your outerwear, this retro-inspired sweater with its intarsia pattern will help you stand out in the après crowd.
03.
Practical makes perfect
Functionality is at the heart of every Moncler garment. This parka-style hooded coat is ideal for snowy conditions, thanks to its fully water and windproof shell. A zipped vent across the back allows for ventilation and the Velcro-fastening cuffs keep heat in. It scores bonus practical points with its in-built rescue locator should you get lost or buried in an avalanche. Pair it with these stylish ski trousers, which are crafted from water-repellent stretch cotton-corduroy and are padded at the knees just in case you come a cropper.
