THE JOURNAL

Messrs Caleb McLaughlin, Milo Ventimiglia and Noah Schnapp
When it comes to red-carpet dressing, always ask an actor.
Last night’s Emmys – the 70th event of its kind – was pitched by many as a battle between HBO and Netflix. That match ended in a draw (they both won 23 awards), so we’re looking for winners elsewhere. If we’re being straightforward about this, the biggest award of the evening went to Game of Thrones, which won outstanding drama series. And, over on Netflix, The Crown, The Americans and the brilliant Godless all recorded notable wins, too. The Assassination of Gianni Versace – a favourite in the MR PORTER office – took home best limited series and Mr Darren Criss claimed best actor.
But let’s be honest. This awards ceremony is not really about great television. If it was, our favourite shows would be projected on big screens erected in the Microsoft Theater. The crowd would sit silently, stares fixed on whatever was showing, breaking concentration only to order Deliveroo or make a cup of tea. No, award ceremonies are about being seen. They are about things that people wear. And, being a purveyor of clothing, this is something that we notice. And last night we happened to notice that a few men were wearing white rather well – which is a tricky thing in the world of formalwear. Below are some of our highlights, and the style tips we took from them.
Go all in

Stranger Things’ Mr Caleb McLaughlin shows that if you’re going to wear white eveningwear, you cannot be shy. It is intrinsically a bold thing to do. So, instead of just wearing a white jacket or a white accessory or two, why not go all-in and wear all-white everything? Unless you’re Mr John Lennon, this is not an easy thing to pull off. Mr McLaughlin helps himself immeasurably by ditching the tie and plumping for some smart sneakers to make his look seem effortless rather than showy.

Mix it up

Despite what we said above, This Is Us star Mr Milo Ventimiglia does an excellent job of demonstrating how to wear white in a smart fashion. If you’re going for the bow tie and shiny Oxfords (they might even be whole cuts – the smartest shoes around), a white jacket, shirt and trousers can leave you looking like a certain seller of Kentucky fried chicken. Go for some black trousers and a black tie to break things up. Mr Ventimiglia is wearing celebrated Italian brand Brunello Cucinelli, by the way.

Be brave

If wearing all-white or being cautious doesn’t quite do it for you, then you could take a look at Mr Noah Schnapp and take his lead. (The more observant among you will likely have noticed this is the second Stranger Things kid to be represented, but it’s not our fault they dress so sharp.) Granted, Mr Schnapp had this look personally designed for him by menswear creative director Ms Silvia Venturini Fendi – a privilege not accessible by many – but we can certainly take inspiration from the gung-ho attitude with which he carries off his suit. Clashing patterns and sneakers with a suit on the yellow carpet? Why ever not.
