Seven Lively Ways To Wear Prints This Season

Words by Mr Michael Cheung

Summer may have departed, but who says that you are bound to wear muted colours and neutrals just because the mercury has dipped? As we seek to lift our spirits after powering through a tough year, bright colours, peacocking prints and flamboyant, unapologetic outfits take on a new appeal. Here are seven outfit ideas that pack a statement.

01.

Psychedelic florals

A new proposition to the monochrome hoodie. The Elder Statesman elevates the street fashion staple by collaborating with Brooklyn-based cartoonist Mr Brian Blomerth on illustrative florals in exaggerated proportions. Channeling a cheery spirit with fluorescent tones, we recommend pairing it with relax-fitted jersey sweatpants in an inviting shade of bubblegum pink.

02.

Reimagined checkers

Bring a certain lightness to your approach towards tailoring with RRL’s unstructured blazer, which showcases a pale-coloured plaid combo that is refreshing and ingeniously versatile, fitting for all seasons. For added contrast, wear it with a pair of ivory trousers with straight legs, sharp pleats and neatly cuffed hems that accentuate your silhouette.

03.

The new prep

Stir things up a smidgen by investing in a sweater patterned with irregular lines. Isabel Marant offers an alpaca-blend rendition with doubled ringer detailing to put emphasis on sportiness.

04.

Campy petals

Seize the moment and allow your effervescent nature to blossom. Or, in other words, opt for bold floral motifs such as the acidic, saturated hues featured on Acne Studios’ oversized shirt here. Commit to the same level of vibrancy to your bottom choices – Marni’s jeans are double-dyed and bleached to create distressed detailing for added grit.

05.

Future rock

SAINT LAURENT epitomises rock-star personality, and the brand’s creative director Mr Anthony Vaccarello is a master at bringing a ruggedness to refined materials. This cotton-blend jacket has been jacquard-woven and mixed with mohair for a fuzzy handle. Complement the gravitas of the heavy-duty outerwear with classic black skinny jeans.

06.

Leafy prints

If floral motifs are a little too bright for your liking, then you can opt for leaf and vine motifs as an understated alternative. The botanical references are not all decorative, it also leaves a sense of optimism by signifying hope, renewal and revival. Playing with scale, this intarsia-knitted sweater by Casablanca, adorned with a prominent ivy motif, would team well with the subtle cascade of abstract butterflies on a pair of jacquard track pants from Japanese brand Needles.

07.

Poster club

If the idea of flora and fauna all on your clothes makes you come out in hives, try some typography instead. American brand of the moment BODE has played with a retro narrative here by forming graphics and labelling inspired by Mexican feedsack from the 1940s. Vibing off the nostalgic, warm tones of the printed shirt, a pair of 1990s inspired light-brown cotton-corduroy trousers that are cut wide-legged for a more impactful fit.
