To succeed in the turbulent world of men’s fashion, having a USP is paramount. A hook, so to speak, that distinguishes you from the competition. For brands such as Gucci, it’s the way they view the past through a thoroughly modern lens. For others, such as Off-White, say, novelty sets them apart. But in the case of Séfr, the Swedish label founded by Messrs Per Fredrikson and Sinan Abi, what differentiates them from every other Tom, Dick and Harry, is an encyclopaedic knowledge of vintage clothing.
Founded in 2012 in Malmö, until a few of years ago, the store’s primary purpose was selling second-hand wares. But not just any second-hand wares. The duo worked hard to source hard-to-find items for their customers. Rare pieces from Maison Margiela, Helmut Lang and Dries Van Noten could be found dotted about their shelves, usually foraged from their well-connected friends. Price or exclusivity wasn’t necessarily the driving force; instead, they concentrated on finding unusual fits and unorthodox fabrics, the idiosyncratic stuff of way back when that you can’t get your hands on these days.
The twosome transplanted the same ethos to their ready-to-wear line, which launched in 2016. It champions the sort of retro-minimalism that Scandi brands are remarkably good at. The latest collection, which lands on MR PORTER today, is titled, rather enigmatically, “Silent Wisdom”, and might just be the sartorial embodiment of the 1970s.
This being an AW19 line, a handful of items (the alpaca-knit sweaters, for instance) might be more useful right now – meteorologically speaking – to our friends in the Southern Hemisphere. But plenty of pieces fall within the perennial bracket: the striped textured-twill trousers in rich tones of terracotta and burnt-orange; flowing crepe shirts with those elongated point collars distinctive to the decade; or the clean-cut tapered trousers that’ll easily find a home in both your work and weekend wardrobes. Perhaps, after all, they do make ’em like they used to.
