Loath as we are to be the bearers of bad news, we consider it our duty to inform you that the arrival of a new season also means a change in temperature. In the northern hemisphere, that means that there are chillier times ahead. But it’s not all grey skies and scattered showers. We have some good news to share, too. The new season means the MR PORTER shelves are replenished with plenty of exciting and stylish stuff. To help you get a headstart planning your autumn wardrobe, we’ve picked out a selection of choice pieces for you to consider.

01.

The smarter sweats

Given the wear you’ve had out of your trusty sweatpants over the past year or so, we predict you’re overdue an update. As restrictions ease, might we suggest opting for a more public-facing example? This smart SSAM pair is part of our Small World collection and made from a luxe blend of cotton and cashmere, so they’ll easily take you from the sofa to the street.

02.

The bold knit

It’s worth stocking up on a few plain and simple sweaters now so you’re prepped for any incoming cold fronts, but a statement option or two wouldn’t go amiss. Perfect for the job, JW Anderson’s cheery logo knit will upgrade any weekend look.

03.

The standout accessory

Accessories are the easiest way to refresh not just your look, but your whole wardrobe. If you tend towards a more neutral palette, they’re also an excellent opportunity to inject a dose of character and colour into an everyday outfit. Fendi’s eye-grabbing tote bag, with it’s hypnotic logo print, is quite a trip.

04.

The throw-on jacket

We’ve yet to come across a lightweight jacket we didn’t like. We even have a whole section of the website dedicated to this transitional wonder. And since autumn can be the most unpredictable season weather-wise, it’s a sage investment. This Dries Van Noten crinkled bomber jacket is made from water-repellent shell, so it earns practical points as well as style ones.

05.

The upgraded classic

If you’ve been following the developing rift between Gen Z and Millennials, you’ll know that jeans – or more specifically, the cut of them – are a bone of contention right now. We’re happy to mediate between those in the skinny and bootcut camps. This straight-legged Our Legacy pair strikes the perfect balance between slim and swamp-like, while the twisted hems are an on-trend nod to the 1990s.

06.

The luxe overshirt

Overshirts (or shackets, depending on your preferred terminology) tend to be regarded as rough and ready garments, more likely to be made from flannel in a rugged Buffalo check than fall into the smart category. Gabriella Hearst is proving that all wrong. Cut in a simple, contemporary fit, this cashmere iteration is as refined as it gets.

07.

The new shoes

To paraphrase singer Mr Paolo Nutini, when you put some new shoes on, suddenly everything is right. He’s not the only one who feels strongly about the power of a box-fresh pair. Bridge the gap between the seasons with these slick leather slides from Bottega Veneta. Wear with your best socks when it gets cooler.
