What To Wear For Lunar New Year
Words by Fedora Abu
25 January 2022

Let’s be honest: Lunar New Year trumps the first of January by a country mile. Rather than feeling obliged to assuage our December over-indulgence by imposing upon ourselves a bunch of punitive resolutions, this time around we’re invited to tuck into a feast of dim sum, give (and receive) most generously and luxuriate in the revelries for a good week or two. To kick off the celebrations, then, we’ve whipped up an edit of five festive items suitable for the occasion. Because while a red envelope stuffed full of cash might be the most coveted prize, we’d wager that a self-gifted box from yours truly comes not too far behind.

01.
The collectable Gucci T-shirt
As the Year of the Ox bows out to the Year of the Tiger, Gucci pays tribute in typical fashion with a limited-edition big-cat capsule collection. Alongside aptly themed updates on the brand’s logo-appliqued bucket hats and camp-collar shirts, you’ll find this jazzy cotton tiger T-shirt, which will make for a cosy sartorial memento of a sure-to-be-wild fortnight.

02.
The tiger-print CELINE HOMME track jacket
Is this tiger-print jersey track jacket by CELINE HOMME a homage to the incoming Lunar Year? Or is it slyly subversive nod to the (yet-to-materialise) “Roaring” Twenties? Glancing across the label’s animal kingdom-inspired collection, which features snakeskin T-shirts, leopard-print shell hoodies and a puppy motif or two, we’ll conclude it’s probably pure coincidence. Still, Mr Hedi Slimane’s timing is impeccable.

03.
The lavish HOORSENBUHS gold bracelet
Amid all the fuss over loved ones, don’t forget to extend that same boundless generosity to yourself. And why shouldn’t self-love take the shape of this open-link gold and diamond bracelet, courtesy of need-to-know LA jeweller HOORSENBUHS?

04.
The vegan TOM FORD sneaker
As you’ll no doubt be aware, the colour red is imbued with extra auspicious magic over the Lunar New Year. But for the more dialled-down dresser, these sneakers by TOM FORD are as good as an amulet. If you vowed to go vegan for the other New Year – and are keen to apply that philosophy to your wardrobe, too – you’ll be pleased to discover these come crafted from an apple-peel infused faux leather that feels as supple and luxurious as the real thing.

05.
The ultra-luxe Cartier watch
There’s perhaps no more fitting piece for Lunar New Year than this particular Ballon Bleu watch by Cartier. Not only does the coveted model emerge from the Parisian jeweller’s signature ruby-red box, but it’s engineered from 18-karat pink gold (gold, of course, symbolising wealth and good fortune). A most timely pick to see in the occasion, should you choose to wear one.
