THE JOURNAL

From the vantage point of our ivory tower (actually above a shopping centre) in bustling London, it can be easy to gaze upon the Scotland’s outlying islands (on a clear day, perhaps) and wonder what the people living there get up to all day. Sure, the residents of Eigg, for example, have done much to push renewable energy and a self-sustained lifestyle, but equally, the local customs of Summerisle, the entirely fictional backdrop to 1973’s The Wicker Man, demonstrate that there is something inherently sinister about remote places well beyond the protective orbital motorways of our safe, cosy, occasionally lawless, liberal-urban-elite bubble. (Meanwhile, the 2006 remake perhaps demonstrates that there’s very likely something inherently sinister about the workings of Mr Nicolas Cage’s mind, but that’s for another time.)
So, more than any item we’ve seen in many a harvest, this Fair Isle sweater by vintage wear and selvedge denim expert KAPITAL – a company hailing from Kojima in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture, which you definitely can’t see from our office, even when it’s especially sunny – captures both the fuzzy, earnest image of the Shetlands that the tourist board would want to promote along with the occultist magick that we secretly suspect to be going on in the shadows. It’s a piece of knitwear worth pulling out for Halloween, when the wool-blend will keep you warm while the skeletal imagery gives others the shivers, leading them in turn to ply you with Haribo Tangfastics: win-win.
Elsewhere in the latest drop from the cult brand is a haori-like black cardigan that doubles down on the Funnybones-style aesthetic, as well as a jacquard number that sways more towards Daisy Age hip-hop than pre-Theodosian polytheistic ritual. And, it must be noted, a leopard-print fleece, which may be an allusion to the legend of the cat sìth, the Celtic fairy feline that roams the Scottish Highlands pilfering people’s souls. Or it could just be, you know, a rather pleasing pattern. Either way, it should help ward off evil spirits, which can only be a good thing at this time of the year.
