THE JOURNAL

Summer calls for elegant slumming, whether relaxing on the Mediterranean coast or day tripping to the Great British seaside. But where ever the hot spell takes you, the season also calls for well-crafted, no-fuss clothes.
It’s a style that Sunspel, as the name suggests, has down to a fine art. The British brand was founded in Nottingham in 1860 by Mr Thomas Hill, son of a hosier manufacturer, who turned his fabric expertise to making lightweight, soft clothing in a very fine cotton.
Forging comfort with classic style, Sunspel is a warm-weather must. So, in timely fashion, MR PORTER has worked with Sunspel to create a capsule collection for hot, sunny days ahead (fingers crossed).
The collaboration harks back to summertime past. For its wider summer collection, Sunspel commissioned the Japanese illustrator Mr Akira Sorimachi to create an exclusive print inspired by nostalgic British summers. Mr Sorimachi takes a wistful trip back, in rich, heritage tones. Two of these, the simply named Sky Blue and Hill Green, are used exclusively in this capsule collection.
The art of staying cool in the heat is also key here. Sunspel staples are soft and breathable: classic T-shirts are spun from pima cotton, Riviera polo shirts come in cotton-mesh. The perfect travel capsule is complemented with two further summer essentials: towelling polo shirts and shorts made from cotton-terry. Quick drying and cool to wear, these are ideal for poolside action or simply lounging around in a stylish, summertime haze. Either way, they make the perfect splash.
