A Weekend In The Langhe With Canali

Come October, the southern area of Italy’s Piedmont region, Langhe, fills up with truffle hunters. Before dawn, they head into the oak and hazel woods around Alba with their dogs, looking for the white truffle that has made this corner of northern Italy famous. It’s muddy, patient work, and the mist is still sitting low in the valleys when it starts.

We don’t mean to brag, but if you’ve got a couple of pieces from our exclusive Canali capsule to hand, you pretty much have all you need for hunting truffles yourself – and everything that comes after. The double-breasted and Nuvola coats are both easy to move in (with the former’s chestnut shade sitting close to the colour of the woodland floor), while the red lining only shows when the coat swings open.

Underneath, the half-zip polo, crew neck and fisherman-rib turtleneck cover the early chill, with a matching wine-red wool felt baseball cap to finish.

Tajarin pasta with shaved truffle is the local order for lunch – with the morning find usually on the table by then. The lambskin jacket, worn with white trousers, looks right at home at a long convivial table, and it’s smart enough for a white-linen restaurant. As for the shoes, swap the streamlined white sneakers for the nubuck Derby shoes for added polish.

Afternoon wine tastings in Barolo and Barbaresco tend to run late, which makes the Prince of Wales check jacket, worn open over a crew neck and tonal trousers, perfectly acceptable for the moments that go well into the evening.

There’s an orderly logic to it all. The collection takes its colours from the Langhe, so you end up wearing the place itself: the off-white of the morning mist, the brown of the vineyard soil and a Barolo red that, by evening, you’ll have in your glass as well.
