THE JOURNAL

If we asked you to pick out the handful of items that you wear most often, we’d wager it wouldn’t take you too long. We all have those pieces that just work. They fit well, we know we look good in them and they can be paired with plenty of other things in our wardrobes. They’re reliable – comforting, even. Likewise, when it comes to shopping, there are likely brands and products that you gravitate towards – you know they work for you and that they make sense with your overall style.
At the same time, we understand that you want to keep your look fresh and find ways to try out new ideas and designers in a way that is approachable and adaptable to your personal taste. That’s where we come in.
Breathing life into your everyday looks can be as easy as swapping out one of your most beloved items for another that fulfils the same purpose, but is just ever so slightly different – perhaps a different cut, fabric or texture, or a new design that’s outside of your usual buying remit. These pieces needn’t replace what you already love, but instead act as additional flavour. Sartorial seasoning, if you will.
To get you started, we’ve collated eight perfect swaps that will add instant impact and interest to whatever you’re wearing.
01. Like your dapper navy blazer? Try a double-breasted alternative

We, along with many others, are long-time proponents of the navy blazer – so much so that we came up with the perfect three ways to style one. This Mr P. seersucker example is a contemporary and relaxed take on the steadfast jacket and would be a fine choice. But if it’s a piece you already wear often, why not try swapping it out for a double-breasted jacket on certain occasions? All over the AW24 runways, this slightly more directional look can be worn in many of the same ways while offering a point of difference to your usual wardrobe. The super-sharp Marri blazer from tailoring demigod The Row has padded shoulders and peak lapels for a bit of spivvy charm.
02. Like your everyday chore jacket? Try a buttery suede blouson

Unsurprisingly, workwear items such as the chore jacket often ended up doing a lot of the heavy lifting in our daily rotation. Hardwearing, often in flattering structured shapes and easy to layer, they also – like this Universal Works chore jacket – have a utilitarian masculinity that is hard not to fall for. If you want to spice things up a bit, however, take a step just a little further in the same direction and consider a suede blouson, like this one from TOM FORD. With the same rugged vibe and a little Western attitude to boot, it can stand in for your chore jacket when you want to look that bit smarter.
03. Like your easy grey sweatshirt? Try a luxey zip-up

The terminally thirsty well understand the allure of grey sweatpants, but the grey sweatshirt has just as many fans – and for more wholesome reasons. Comfy, laid-back and ultra-versatile, one might call this AMI PARIS sweater the platonic ideal. Part of the appeal of a good cotton-jersey is that it can easily slide under most jackets, so when you’re looking to branch out here, find something in an equally slim weight. We suggest this tie-dyed cashmere hoodie by The Elder Statesman. It has been knitted on hand-looms in Italy exclusively for MR PORTER, and adheres to our Consciously Crafted guidelines.
04. Like your classic Oxford shirt? Try a timeless knitted polo

A crisp white button-down shirt, such as this beautiful example from Sunspel, should not be missing from any man’s wardrobe. For work and formal events, but also worn over a T-shirt at the weekend or with shorts on vacation, it is one of the ultimate essentials. If you’re one of the many who go through shirts like nobody’s business, however, adding a knitted polo to your roster of go-to items can immediately open up new avenues without you having to rework the rest of your outfit. This beautifully soft and breathable open-weave polo by ZEGNA is knitted from a draping blend of cotton, linen, silk and cashmere. Try it over mid-rise jeans or wide-leg trousers, under a blazer or with pressed linen shorts.
05. Like your summer linen shirt? Try an embroidered option

Linen camp-collar shirts will never go out of style – every summer, ours come out of the wardrobe, and usually stay that way for the whole season. Frescobol Carioca’s Angelo shirt comes in four different colours and we wouldn’t stop you collecting them all. If this is the kind of thing you also find yourself reaching for time and again, how about swapping in a textured or embroidered style, like this pale cornflower blue broderie anglaise number from Wales Bonner. The delicate construction layers nicely over a white tank or tee, or go bare underneath and really feel the benefit of those holes.
06. Like your smart casual chinos? Try a wide-leg look

Many an ode to chinos has been penned by the MR PORTER team over the years, celebrating the style’s enduring appeal, a hefty part of which comes from their smart casual versatility. Not too formal, but more formal than jeans (and certainly not scruffy), chinos are the man about town’s best friend. Just take this slim tan pair from Canali as evidence. If yours are a little tired from all the work they’re putting in, however, our pick to help push your sartorial boundaries just a little would be a wide-leg pleated pair, such as these by AMIRI. The dreamy blue and white cross-hatch texture, high waist, graceful loose leg and pressed creases give them an old-school elegance that could be your new summer persona.
07. Like your wear-with-anything sneakers? Try a canvas pair

OK, we’re not going to address a certain someone who may or may not have recently worn a certain pair of sneakers (and since apologised for bringing the style into disrepute). What we will say, is that a good streamlined, all-rounder sneaker, for example adidas Originals’ Samba or a great pair of Common Projects, gain cult status for a reason. These boys go with everything. Want to try something new, though? A workwear-adjacent court sneaker such as this pair from visvim could be just the thing. Made in Japan from sturdy canvas, with a Vibram rubber sole and rubber toe cap, they feature an artistic blue wave detail that marks them out from the ordinary (just like you want to be).
08. Like your handy belt bag? Try a nylon messenger bag

Holidays, festivals, nipping about town, going down the pub… Once upon a time, the belt bag was reserved for a few occasions, but we can’t be the only ones who find ours slung across the chest more often than not these days? This one from Master-Piece includes separate compartments to organise your valuables and is even made from recycled materials. So, why should we want to try something new? Because you can have both. And, because that something new might be LEMAIRE’s gorgeous Soft Game quilted cross-body bag, which has enough space for your valuables and your other work or weekend necessities.
