How To Stay Dry

20 September 2016

The technical coats, jackets and outerwear to see you through the wet autumn weather.

If you live in London, you will probably have been woken up by an apocalyptic bang at about 4am last Friday morning. And then kept awake by a continuing series of apocalyptic bangs until it was time to go to work. At which point you will have got drenched in a biblical downpour. Either because you were entirely unprepared for the rain or because the coat you selected was far too heavy and thick for the still-warm weather, so you couldn’t even wear it. In light of this, we couldn’t help notice the selection of lightweight waterproof jackets going live on MR PORTER today. And we decided to whittle them down to three of our favourites, with a selection that should cater for every taste. Whether you’re hiking up a mountain, or just need of something stylish around town – try one of these.

Founded in California (not as rugged and wild a location as its this brand's name might suggest) more than 40 years ago, Patagonia is a brand that knows its outdoor gear, having originally been created to supply climbers with everything they needed to survive on a mountain or cliff face. Today, Patagonia still very much offers such services, and this jacket here would do nicely for a hike in any conditions. But such are current trends that you could also wear this in the city, on a cycle commute perhaps (and there is certainly no danger of people not seeing you on the road). Pair it with some practical Snow Peak cargo trousers if you’re heading out on an adventure, and be ready whatever the weather.

Here is a light shell jacket which we consider to be very much at the opposite end of the spectrum to our friend above. The brand may begin with the same letter, but Prada’s priorities are rather different to those of Patagonia. This piece is still up to the fundamental task at hand of keeping you dry (and cool), although it’s more suited for dashing between your cab and that chic dinner spot than for withstanding torrential downpours in the depths of the countryside. What it lacks in water-repelling qualities, however, it makes up for in the style stakes, with a deep navy tone and sleek fit. A nice pair of black jeans are your best friend in a city shower, as they won’t show any signs of dampness, and these Nonnative ones are a perfect pairing.

We like to think that this black waterproof by Arc’teryx lies somewhere in the middle of the above two. It has all the technical details one needs to battle the elements – it even has the word “atom” in its name. It is insulated with Coreloft™ technology. And, it packs into its own neat pocket should you want to stow it away in a backpack. But apart from that, it looks really, really great. This is normcore streetwear at its finest. And if you take your style cues from grime MCs, then you needn’t ever take this thing off. Finish the look with some white sneakers, like this basketball-inspired update on the classic Common Projects design.
