The Last Shadow Puppets: In Love With A Beautiful Woman

Words by Mr Tom M Ford

6 April 2016

Messrs Alex Turner and Miles Kane draw up an exclusive playlist of the tracks they have on repeat right now.

With the Arctic Monkeys on official hiatus, before last week we hadn’t heard any new material from Mr Alex Turner and his increasingly majestic bouffant since September 2013’s AM. So it is somewhat of a relief that he and his musical counterpart Mr Miles Kane have resurrected punchy side project The Last Shadow Puppets for their new 1970s soul-influenced album Everything You’ve Come To Expect – a follow-up to 2008’s debut The Age Of The Understatement. (If you haven’t heard the latest album, released 1 April, check out singles “Bad Habits” and “Aviation”).

But what inspired the new record? We asked Messrs Turner and Kane to create a playlist based on the songs they currently have on repeat. Hit play on Spotify to hear it, and read what Mr Kane had to say about their choices, below.

Dr Hook, “When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman”

“This is the sort of tune I’ll put on when I’m getting ready in the morning, or of an evening before heading out into the night. It’s one of my mother’s favourite songs and has been a constant throughout my life. I always thought it was cheesy, but now I think it’s genius.”

The Three Degrees, “Collage”

“I’ve been hammering this song loads at the moment. A friend of mine sent it over to me and it’s been blowing my mind. The descending vocals and the drum groove really get me moving.”

Toto, “Georgy Porgy”

“This is a bit of a disco/soul classic. Simple lyrics and a great melody – you can’t really ask for anything more!”

Pierre Cavalli, “Un Soir Chez Norris”

“This is a great song reminiscent of a James Bond-style movie or a Western film. To me, it evokes images of Clint Eastwood on the moon – something mad like that. It’s very atmospheric. Everyone should definitely check it out.”

Bobby Womack, “Please Forgive My Heart”

“There have been a lot of songs written about making mistakes in life, and regret. For me, this song represents that like no other. It’s a go-to when I feel sad or down. The honesty of the lyrics always gets me. It’s a good one to play through your headphones and drift away to.”
