THE JOURNAL

As we hurtle towards September and autumn (assuming seasons are still a thing this year) we look back on August in a vein attempt to wring the last remnants out of summer and the fits, to use the vernacular, that went hardest. You can either see it as whimsical nostalgia for the past, or practical research for the future. As mentioned, it depends if the cold weather returns. Apocalyptic conversations aside, see which men caught our eye this month because of their style.

Mr Damiano David

Since Italian band Måneskin catapulted to global fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2021, the foursome has been outfitted in looks from their “local” label Gucci and were personally selected by Mr Alessandro Michele to front a campaign for the brand. So, it’s no surprise to see lead singer Mr Damiano David rocking out on stage at Lollapalooza in a pink Gucci ensemble, complete with stacked-heel loafers, a three-strand pearl necklace and matching earrings. We would expect nothing less from a musician channelling 1970s-style rock ’n’ roll glam through a Gen Z lens.

Mr Mordechai Rubinstein

What do you wear to a pool party in the Hamptons? That’s a question for the king of New York street style Mr Mordechai Rubinstein, or Mister Mort to his Instagram followers. His answer? Well, take a look for yourself. Banana-yellow chino shorts, a yellow and blue Fair-Isle sweater, a classic navy blazer and just a hint of purple from a polo shirt collar poking out from under the sweater combine for a look that we’re calling “alt-prep”, though other naming suggestions are welcome.

Mr Ryan Reynolds

Printed shirts are some of the greatest dividers in the history of men’s style – how much pattern is too much? Is there a specific place and time for them? There’s no such thing as a correct answer to the question, so we’ll let Mr Ryan Reynolds do all the talking. He was photographed arriving at Jimmy Kimmel Live! in LA in the kind of look you’d steal from your cool dad: a not-too-loud printed shirt, a white tank top, chinos and Converse All-Stars. Oh, and that striped-candy watch strap? It’s from laCalifornienne and exclusive to MR PORTER, in case you were wondering where he shops…

Bad Bunny

He may be called Bad Bunny, but his heart is in the right place. No, wait. While not anatomically accurate in its positioning, we do like the ideograph that symbolises the organ that pumps blood around the human body (also not anatomically accurate) on his shirt. It’s a nod to the sad heart motif of his latest behemoth album, Un Verano Sin Ti, which you can also see attached to his microphone, as well as in the form of a tattoo peeking out from the matching shorts (again, nice, but further up the torso and to the left). We’ll tell you what else he’s put his heart into: the tie-dye print, not to mention clashing sunglasses. And soul? It’s more Reggaeton.

A$AP Rocky

Were he not arrested in April for assault with a deadly weapon, we would say that A$AP Rocky can do no wrong. But this is a best-dressed line-up, rather than a felony one, so we will keep things appropriately shallow. What we mean is his “pretty Flacko” good looks. His refreshingly authentic relationship with Rihanna. And his preternatural ability to set trends with what he wears. We love the simplicity of this rig. Ripped wide-leg jeans, Lakers cap, brown plaid shirt. When you’re A$AP Rocky you can make something greater than the sum of its parts.

Mr Joe Jonas

We have a sneaking suspicion that Mr Joe Jonas may have read our recent clothes are almost good enough to eat story, because he’s provided us with a shirt that could easily double up as the perfect summer picnic blanket. And, quite frankly, he’s dressed for the occasion, too. Keeping it simple with white shorts, white adidas sneakers and a white tank top, the BODE striped shirt takes centre stage with its bold mint-green colour and floral detailing. Tied in with an olive backpack and accessorised with a pearl necklace and blue-lens sunglasses, and he’s ready for an afternoon in the Miami sunshine.

Mr Robert Aramayo

When we talk about suits getting more interesting, this is the kind of thing we mean. Mr Robert Aramayo – coming soon to your screens as Elrond in Prime Video’s Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power series – deployed this powerful look at the premiere. Some would say it’s barely a suit at all – more of an overshirt and matching trousers – to which we would reply “well, exactly”. The black T-shirt grounds the whole thing a little, giving Aramayo license to break out the clashy-matchy red sneakers. All he needs to do now is hope one of those rings gives him the power of sewing on missing buttons…
