Five Things For: The Beach

Words by Chris Elvidge

The final part in our series on this summer’s best menswear takes us to – where else? – the beach. As with our two previous entries, summer in the city and summer holiday, we’ve hand-picked five pieces that are intended to be worn together as a ready-made outfit, but are versatile enough that you could just as easily pick one or two and slot them into your existing summer wardrobe. Not included below but highly recommended are a tote bag, a beach towel and a bottle of high-SPF sunscreen. For everything else you’ll need this summer, read on.

The mid-length TOM FORD swim shorts

If you bring nothing else to the beach, bring a pair of swim shorts – and make sure that they fit. This pair from TOM FORD is slim-fitting and mid-rise, finishing about halfway up the thigh. It’s a particularly flattering cut, and the built-in side tabs allow for easy adjustments to ensure the perfect fit.

The Mr P. beach-to-bar polo shirt

The pastelly orange tones of this polo shirt by Mr P. work beautifully with the olive green of our TOM FORD swim shorts. But they’ll go just as well with white denim when you leave the beach in the evening and head out for dinner.

The eye-catching Garrett Leight California Optical sunglasses

Sunglasses are everywhere on the beach, so stand out from the crowd by opting for a pair of coloured frames this summer. The light-brown frames on these Hampton sunglasses from Garrett Leight California Optical – the brand calls the colour “toffee” – are a subtle yet stylish point of difference.

The luxe Brunello Cucinelli sandals

Brunello Cucinelli’s uncompromising approach to craftsmanship extends to the tiniest of details. Made from butter-soft leather and suede, these luxe flip-flops are a world away from the plasticky versions being flogged next to the beach.
