Introducing the second drop from our eponymous brand, inspired by stateside styles of the 1960s.

At MR PORTER, we’ve always been keen to talk about style in a down-to-earth way. Less of the breathless “must-have” and “now-trending” type language, and more of the “what you need” and “how to wear it” sort of thing. As such, when looking for inspiration, rather than turning to the lovely but rather impractical suggestions of runway fashion, we’ve often looked to the sartorial habits of real men past and present. And of course, when it came to launching our own menswear brand, Mr P., our approach was no different.

And so, in creating the February 2018 instalment of Mr P., available to shop on MR PORTER from today, we looked to one exceptionally stylish man in particular: Mr Dennis Hopper. More specifically, we were thinking about how the renegade actor lived his life in the years pre-Easy Rider, when he was gallivanting around 1960s Los Angeles with the artsy likes of Messrs Ed RuschaAndy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and taking the exceptional photographs that are now recognised as being among the most indelible documents of this heady era.

What does it mean in terms of the clothes? Well, first of all, that we’re adding a cornucopia of classic Americana shapes to Mr P.’s existing range of everyday essentials. Highlights include camp-collar shirtswide-leg chinos and a new M65 field jacket in a peached technical fabric. But more than just recreating these styles, we’ve updated them, packing them full of the details that we know our customers will be looking out for. That means the very best fabrics sourced from all over the world – our favourite is a Japanese patchwork textile, though we’re also fond of the utilitarian herringbone twills – and thoughtful construction methods that optimise the feel and fit of each piece. In terms of colour, we’ve gone for a more balmy, muted palette to complement the staple navies and greys of the launch collection, and in fabrics we’ve focused on the cottons and jerseys that we appreciate will wear best in spring – though that doesn’t mean there isn’t some excellent knitwear too.

There are, of course, many pieces we’re also proud of: the weather-resistant raincoat; the indigo-dyed striped shirt; the unstructured tailoring, garment-dyed for a washed-out effect. But even better is the fact that this has all been designed as part of an evolving wardrobe – we encourage you to mix and match this spring’s new additions with existing pieces from Mr P.’s core range. And we’re looking forward to seeing how you do it, via the @mrp Instagram account. In the meantime, scroll down to discover the full range – we very much hope you enjoy it.
